"The companyâ s workmen stayed till the electric company reconnected the power line to our service panel. Then they checked to make sure everything was working inside the home. I would highly recommend this company."

"Ed Riley is extremely knowledgeable about what causes lighting and how to protect from it. He explained to me which and how structures develop static electricity that lead to lighting discharges in a way that the physics made sense to me. They were also reasonably priced and kept their word. Definitely recommend them."

"Mr. Donohue is very knowledgeable and has excellent experience in the lightning protection area. He responds quickly and has a very professional team of workers. He quoted the job using google earth information. When he visited the site he reduced his price by over 50%. I highly recommend him and I will use his company again."

"We contacted Lee Electric to get a quote on work that needed to be done on a property we were considering purchasing. Ada called us back almost immediately (she was very responsive throughout our interactions). She came out to the house a day or two later to examine the electrical systems and discuss the scope of the renovations we were considering. She diligently went through each and every project that needed to be done, examined the house thoroughly (from top to bottom), and provided such excellent insight into the condition of the electrical systems, the scopre of work that needed to be done, and the exact  (as well as what did not need to be done, which we greatly appreciated), and she outlined the costs for doing it. In every regard, Ada was EXCELLENT. We did not wind up buying the property, but we were so impressed with her knowledge and professionalism, we would absolutely hire her in the blink of an eye. We'd hire Lee Electric, too, as long as Ada came with the package. ;) Five stars.

Electrical questions, answered by experts

When converting a standard 120-volt outlet to a 240-volt outlet, the only components you can typically reuse are the existing electrical box and the hole in the wall. Everything else—including the wiring, breaker, and receptacle—should be replaced to ensure both safety and efficiency. Appliances designed for 240 volts have different plug configurations that won’t fit into a standard 120-volt outlet, making it necessary to install a compatible 240-volt receptacle. This design helps prevent overloading or underloading the power available to any one outlet or circuit.

Yes, a light switch still has power even when switched off. Switches only interrupt or continue the flow of electricity into a fixture or outlet; they do not shut off the power flowing into the wire. The only way to shut off power in a light switch is to turn off the power at the circuit breaker.

Yes, the National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that outdoor Christmas lights be plugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet to prevent hazardous electrical shocks or an electrical fire. It’s a code violation to plug outdoor Christmas lights into a non-GFCI outlet, so be sure to follow these guidelines for a safe and successful installation.

An outlet can trip because the circuit it’s on is overloaded, meaning the devices plugged into it are drawing more power than the circuit can safely carry. Another culprit could be because a power surge from a storm or accident caused a problem with your local electrical grid or there’s a short or a fault causing power to run through the circuit in a dangerous or unplanned way.

A breaker won’t always trip if an outlet burns out. If the outlet is overloaded or has a short circuit, the breaker is designed to trip and discontinue power to the outlet. However, some wiring problems that can burn out an outlet may not cause the breaker to trip, so don’t rely on it as a signal that something is wrong.
