"1st, I just finished filling out the search questionnaire on Angies's List when a young lady called from Dirty Deeds. She explained the procedure and cost. I scheduled the next morning at 9am. The crew ( 2 men ) were right on time & very courteous. They took their time and explained the procedure. They covered the furniture to protect it, cleaned up afterward and even vacuumed the carpet where debris fell. I opted for the additional Microbial protection. The price was a little bit more than expected, 12 vents & 2 returns, but it was worth it for quick, friendly, prompt service. I would call then again."

Air Duct Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The number of return air vents a house should have depends on its overall square footage. You'll need one supply vent and one return vent for every 100 to 150 square feet of living space. This means that, ideally, there should be at least one return air vent in every room. However, if the room is 100 square feet or larger, it's better to have two or three. A 2,000-square-foot home should have between 13 and 20 return air vents, in total.

During your HVAC preseason maintenance call, your contractor will inspect the system for any problems and make small adjustments for better efficiency. Tasks include, though are not limited to:

  • Changing filters

  • Checking the thermostat

  • Clearing away dust and debris

  • Checking for mold

  • Inspecting electrical elements

  • Inspecting condensate lines and drain

  • Cleaning evaporator coils

  • Ensuring ignition function

While you can do some of these services yourself, hiring a professional to keep HVAC equipment running can be helpful. These experts know what to look for and may be able to spot potential issues before they become problems. Many HVAC companies offer annual maintenance plans.

Figuring out why you have a musty smell in your house is the first step to getting rid of it. Mold or mildew is most likely causing the unpleasant odor. People use these terms interchangeably, but they’re actually different.

Mold is a fungus that loves to grow in moist, humid places. It’s typically black or green and has a raised, uneven texture. Stay vigilant for signs mold may be growing in your home.

You’ll find mildew growing on your shower walls and in your bathroom’s nooks and crannies. It’s a specific type of mold that grows flat. Mildew is usually white, gray, or yellow.

There should be at least one vent in every room in your home to ensure proper airflow, but it really depends on the size of your space. Open-concept floor plans should be considered in terms of zones, with an air vent in each one. Additionally, larger rooms may have more than one vent for proper heating and cooling.

Several factors contribute to the persistent growth of mold in vents, with excess moisture being the most common culprit. Consistent mold formation in vents indicates an ongoing moisture problem within the HVAC system or its surroundings, likely caused by condensation on cool surfaces in areas with high humidity. Moisture accumulation can also result from leaks in ductwork, inadequate ventilation, or insufficient insulation, creating an environment favorable for mold growth. Regular inspections, addressing potential sources of moisture, maintaining proper ventilation, and routine HVAC maintenance can help prevent the recurrence of mold in vents. If the issue persists, seek professional assistance to identify and rectify the underlying problems.
