"I called Marvin on 4/10/2018 and he came out the next day to take a look at the job to give me an estimate. I explained that I wanted the railing to be of Spanish motif and have a gate such that we could walk from the porch to the back yard. I additionally told him that I wanted heavy gauge or solid steel posts such that the railing would not move if someone leaned on it. He had a catalog with him that had every handrail and baluster under the sun. I was able to find exactly what I wanted. He went out to his truck and in about 10 minutes had an estimate to do the job. I gave him a 50% deposit and he then left. He explained to me that he had to order all the materials since what I had selected was all special order. I additionally requested that the railings be powder coated gloss black. At that time he indicated that powder coating would add an additional 10-14 days to the fabrication process, I was OK with that. After about 2 weeks I checked in with him to check on the progress, he told me that all the railing parts had arrived and he was in the fabrication process at that time. The total length of the railings was over 40' so this was a lot of balusters to weld. About 2 weeks later he called me to let me know the railings were complete and we scheduled a day for installation. On the day of installation he and a helper arrived on time and it took about 5-6 hours to install. The job turned out better than I could have ever imagined, everyone that sees our porch has remarked what a beautiful railing. I could not have been more satisfied. Prior to calling MG fabrication, I read each and every review he had on Angie's List. During the installation I was chatting with Marvin about some of the reviews posted on Angie's List that mention he was slow in responding and I told him after reading them in my opinion most of them had unrealistic expectations. You have to remember that Marvin does all the fabrication and installation himself, so you have a guy that has been welding all his life working on your job. His company has no salespersons, or other employees that run up his overhead. He additionally told me that he located his shop on the west side of San Antonio where his monthly leasing expenses were very cheap. I liked everything about this guy and his company, his estimate was less than I expected and I gave him the job without getting any more estimates, he has a great business model, essentially no overhead, and that model was reflected in the estimate I received, and the workmanship is impeccable. Once my wife and I can decide on how we want the stairs to look we are going to meet with Marvin and have him fabricate our stairs. Thanks Marvin"

"Great service and experience, To start it's hard to find quality work and he definitely does it! I had this young man come out and give me and estimate to weld my ranch hand bumpers on my f-250 front and back. He took a look at the bumpers crawling underneath the truck to see how he could tac them on with out any issues. He then quoted me on the spot and it was a definitely a fair price. The work was amazing. So much so I even had him draw up a plan to build a bbq for my hitch and even that came out even better than I thought."

"Tony and his crew did an outstanding job removing an old fence and replacing it with a brand new fence. Before the project Tony walked me through the various materials that were available so I could make an informed decision. During the work Tony and his crew were quick and efficient in removing the old fence, cleaning up the area, installing the new fence, and removing the old materials after the project was completed. Throughout the process Tony communicated updates on the project so that I was informed of the next steps. The new fence looks outstanding and I will definitely be recommending Dobi General Contractors to others and using them for future projects."

"Stop looking for a fence contractor and hire these professionals now!!!! Don’t even worry about getting any other quotes… just hire these guys and sit back and relax. We just had our fence completely replaced and these guys are AMAZING. After speaking with Rey, we learned that everyone who does the work is employed by the company and not contracted workers, and it shows. They take pride in their work. Three gentlemen showed up on time and got right to work. They cleaned up all of mess and took all of the trash and old wood with them. It took them about 7 hours to complete the fence. The fence is perfect, they made sure it was straight and spaced evenly. The gate is amazing! It smoothly glides open and closed. Our neighbors also had their fence done and through all of the mass communication between us, our neighbors, and Rey, Rey was so helpful and patient. We had some miscommunication with our neighbors and Rey was extremely honest in resolving the issue. We will always use and highly recommend this company. For reference, the total fence we had replaced was 117 linear feet with one 4-foot gate. We had Postmaster metal posts and 6" wide Western Red Cedar pickets in the shadowbox style (pickets on both sides - so that costs more than just pickets on one side) and it cost about $4,200. Keep in mind this is during COVID19 in which there is a cedar shortage and wood prices have tripled. Amazing work at a great price!!!"

Welding questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on unit complexity, labor, wall mounting needs, and additional accessories like floating shelves.

Welders use a variety of methods in their trade. Different types of welding are better suited for different purposes and contexts. For example, stick welding is a versatile form suitable for most metals and alloys. The most common types of welding include:

  • Stick welding: $100–$1,000

  • Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding: $250 and up

  • Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding: $250 and up

  • Gas welding: $150 and up

  • Forge welding: $15–$25 per hour

Professional metal fabricators typically charge around $70 per hour, but the total cost of your project will depend on several factors. The largest cost drivers are the size, complexity, and design of the project, as well as the price and type of metal used. A good way to estimate the total cost is to multiply the cost of raw materials by four; typically, one-quarter of the total goes toward materials and three-quarters toward labor. Your geographic location can also influence costs, as labor and material prices vary by region.

You should not do your own welding unless you have the proper training and experience. Most home electrical systems can only handle MIG welding, which creates weaker bonds than TIG welding and won’t work on certain metals or metal thicknesses. Both welding forms usually require the use of shielding gas, which can be dangerous to store at home. Additionally, welding machines create temperatures of over 3,000 degrees, and the sparks can blind you if you don’t have the proper equipment. As such, it’s usually better to hire a professional welder for your welding projects.

Choosing the right metal fabricator for your project begins with research. Find a reputable fabrication company by searching for reputable contractors in your area, and then reviewing photos of their previous work, customer reviews, and photos of the company’s workshop.

Once you’ve narrowed down the list, contact the companies to ask about the types of metal fabrication projects they specialize and inquire about guarantees and warranties on workmanship. You should also ensure the company uses high-quality material, and ask about the schedule and turnaround time for your proposed project.
