You may be wondering what travertine is. Travertine is a natural stone found in mineral spring deposits and mined from a rock quarry. Manufacturers cut the stone into slabs and then into tiles or pavers.

The stone is tumbled in rubber or plastic-coated barrels to give it a rustic look or brushed with a wire wheel to give it texture. Additionally, polished travertine is finished with glossy sealants. In most cases, holes or pits are filled with color-matched resin, epoxy fillers, cement, or sanded grout.

Uniform spacing between tiles is important for a professional and clean appearance. To achieve this spacing, tile spacers should be placed between the tiles and left in place until the mortar hardens and the tiles are secure. You can use X-shaped spacers vertically in between the tiles and laid flat at the corners.

Much like granite, as long as you properly seal your marble slab or tiles, it makes an excellent stain-resistant option for backsplashes. Marble is also durable, heat-resistant, and, of course, stylish. However, since marble is one of the priciest materials available, you may want to consider a less-expensive backsplash option, such as tile.

Grout and caulk are commonly used together, especially in bathrooms. Grout goes between the tiles and keeps them sturdy and in place on the walls or floor. Caulk goes in corners or where two different materials meet (like where the bathtub meets the tile) to create a waterproof seal. However, they are not interchangeable—you shouldn't use caulk to adhere tile and shouldn’t use mortar if you need a waterproof seal.
