"In August 2022, after hearing about DFW Improved on a home improvement radio show, we entered into two contracts with them for a roof replacement and interior water damage repair. These contracts were based on insurance-approved scopes following the 2021 ice storm. DFW Improved began the roof replacement project first. Following the replacement, the roof continued to leak due to their failure to replace the flashings. Despite corresponding work items in the insurance scope (confirmed later by the insurance adjuster's email), the DFW Improved salesperson insisted that flashing was not part of the roof. He threatened legal action if further payment was not made. Prior to this, they presented two identical model shingles as choices, which their own roof subcontractor on-site disclosed. Upon our inquiry via email, instead of addressing the issue, the salesperson accused us of defaming their company. Furthermore, they quoted $900 for a non-existent siding hole and estimated $25,000 for a bookcase, which their own designer valued at $6,000 to $7,000. While the roof leaking issue was still unresolved, DFW Improved began interior work. Instead of submitting the agreed supplement request as agreed, they skipped necessary steps to cut water-damaged drywall. To prevent wasted effort, we instructed workers to stop. The salesperson responded, stating that workers would not proceed with any work not approved by insurance. However, he emailed the insurance company claiming that the work had already been completed, causing significant confusion for us. During the halt period, we sent out numerous issues such as broken air pipes, cracked roof rafters, missing insulation, roof holes, missing felt paper, and a leaking roof. However, we received no response other than prevaricate explanations and demanding for money. We escalated to the DFW Improved upper manager who responded that they are their best team members and disregarded our request for an alternative project team. DFW Improved abandoned the projects and warranties, and initiated separation in December 2022. Both parties engaged in negotiations over separation costs. During this process, DFW Improved unexpectedly sent four individuals to our house, claiming to inspect texture work and demanding payment. Subsequently, DFW Improved placed a lien on our house, and their lawyer sent a demanding letter stating they would auction our house and (quote)“sue Vigorously” if payment was not made, despite the mediation/arbitration clause clearly outlined in the contracts. Under this pressure, we filed a claim in Tarrant County Small Claims Court, where the lien was placed. Later, their lawyer filed a motion to transfer the case to Collin County, where DFW Improved is based. We refused to comply with a demand for $5,000 and the confidentiality requirement during mediation. DFW Improved filed a new case simultaneously in the higher Tarrant County District Court, demanding a new amount of $59,845 and seeking to enforce the lien, providing no explanation for this amount. According to their co-owner's email, their accounting book calculated that we owed them a total of $1,260 (detailed below). During pre-mediation discussions, their lawyer attempted to justify their request for $8k, citing that a significant portion was allocated to attorneys' fees. We did not engage their lawyer to send us a threatening letter containing false statements about suing us without mediation. Their lawyer also declined $65 public mediator service provided by the Tarrant Small Claims Court. Additionally, they unilaterally escalated the dispute to a higher court. We have never been late with their payments. In fact, DFW Improved made a math error by crediting the blind work twice. When we brought this to their attention, DFW Improved spent extra time correcting the invoice, and their salesperson initiated an internal investigation. Any delay was certainly not caused by us. DFW Improved filed a lien attempting to collect the costs again, despite already receiving payment. See the invoice they submitted, which completely overlooks the $35,895.76 payment we made (supported by our bank transactions). —-------------The payment schedule on the contract has major math errors—--------- Payments for the work are due as follows: Contract Total $ 194,972.33 $ 19,497.23 deposit is due at initial design meeting.(10% of the Contract Total) 20% of the Contract Total is due at the preconstruction meeting. 30% of the Contract Total is due at start of drywall repair. ←– we requested halt at this phase and according to texas property code Sec. 28.003. "After struggling to find a contractor that we could trust, we found Jose and his company. He answered all of our questions about insurance, design, timeline, and costs, and once we hired him he immediately began working on mockups, ordering materials, and scheduling subcontractors. From day one, everything flowed smoothly. Jose was there to oversee everything, and his team is incredibly skilled. They finished ahead of schedule and on budget. Everyone has complimented the fantastic tiling in my bathroom! My husband and I are so happy we went with Jose's company and we couldn't recommend them enough. Another bonus is that while he supports you in whatever design you choose, he does provide input based on his many years of experience, which I appreciated greatly."

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing questions, answered by experts

The big downside to refacing is that it has its limits. It won't improve your kitchen's layout, create more storage space, or boost functionality. It also relies on your existing cabinet boxes being in good condition. If the bones aren't solid or your kitchen needs more than a visual upgrade, refacing might be more like dressing up a dud.

Whether to reface or paint comes down to personal preference. Refacing strikes a convenient balance between being more affordable than replacing cabinets and longer-lasting than painting them. Furthermore, it allows homeowners to completely change the aesthetic of their cabinets and still paint them if they choose to. If money was no object, refacing is the better option. However, it’s more expensive and time-consuming than painting. Painting remains an effective way to revamp your cabinets, both in look and longevity, without spending a ton of money.

Not all refaced cabinets will peel, but they may if they have improperly installed veneer. To avoid peeling, hire a professional with a warranty on their work and materials, or make sure you purchase quality materials and follow all manufacturer-recommended installation instructions.

How much cheaper it is to replace your cabinet doors depends on your needs. If you’re looking to spruce up the look and feel of your kitchen, then you can make cosmetic adjustments to your existing doors, like installing new knobs or a fresh coat of paint. Cabinets can be some of the most costly parts of a kitchen remodel, but if there’s structural damage regarding your doors, then replacing them is your best option.

While it’s possible to reface or refinish kitchen cabinets yourself, it requires substantial time, money, and sweat equity. In particular, cabinet refacing requires many tools and materials, costing you between $1,645 and $6,570, depending on what you already own. Besides that, this is a project that shows imperfections easily. If carpentry isn't your strong suit, hiring a cabinet professional is best to ensure high-quality results.
