"Hector and his crew came out to do a tile job for me around a back yard pool. They completed the job as scheduled and worked late into the evening to meet the deadline. Everything looks great. Very professional as well."

"NIGHTMARE TO WORK WITH!!! In summary, I strongly advise doing your own due diligence to understand the deck process (right materials and practices) before hiring, and hire an inspector to ensure the quality of the work. Honestly would avoid this company all together as they appear to have also lied about being BBB accredited and insured (no certificate of insurance ever provided). Texans Decks cuts corners both in materials and process not meeting residential building codes in either ([*** Link removed ***] Took a project that was estimated to be complete in one week by Samuel Amador (owner) over 3 months and is still incomplete. Now have to find someone else to finish the job. There are constant delays due to weather (won't come out if even 1% chance of rain), material unavailability (didn't order TREX product when deposit was received), wanting to work on other customer projects, and personal issues. Always having to follow up to see if workers will be on site as no notice is given when not coming unless you reach out yourself. Every time asked when the project is expected to be complete the answer is always give me another week. Due to the prolonged delays with no workers on site the area under the framing of the deck was constantly flooded due to leftover piles of dirt and concrete that had to be cleared on my own. Scrap lumber, and contractor trash bags left in the yard so long all the grass has died underneath. Cut off part of my house without even telling me. Only would respond to questions or attempt to remedy incorrect building when threatening a lawsuit or bringing in an inspector otherwise they would ignore you. There's such a long list of red flags. Now the job is abandoned and the only way to recover funds is through a lawsuit."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.

Costs depend on damage type, material, and labor rates.

Building codes vary by location, and you should always consult local codes before planning construction. Generally speaking, however, railing requirements stipulate that decks more than 30 inches off the ground need railings for safety purposes. These railings usually need to be at least 36 inches tall, although California and Washington require rails to be 42 inches or taller.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.
