Since it was the first time they had worked in this city, they had to provide a lot of documentation and permitting was delayed. They would now be on Temple Terraces approved Provider List. When they were able to start cutting, the tree over the house was found to be split and more dangerous to cut than expected. They had to work very carefully. It then started to heavily rain. They were forced to come back another day. On the second day, they were successful in removing the dying split tree. They thoroughly ground out the stumps as well as the entire flowerbed. We had just purchased this property and the flowerbeds were overgrown with weeds, saplings and trash trees. By grinding them thoroughly, they saved me hours of work. They ground the wood to mulch and helped move it around my yard to save me energy and time. Since it had taken awhile to finish the contracted job, they asked if we could negotiate a price and continue the rest of the day. I had some heavy jobs, moving Ligustrums and Gardenias to new locations as well as trimming some of the overgrown decorative trees and palms. Afterwards, I took a Master's Level Palm Care class and the recommendations made by Danny were accurate to what I learned in my class. The crew was very polite and nice. They worked very hard. I would work with them again in the future. Hitt's Landscaping was our contractor's choice to pull together the existing yard and a new addition on our home. He was seldom on site and had no effective foreman. The job was handled unprofessionally and was interminable. Landscaping masonry was great, although the fountain he built for us leaked underground and killed a 20 year old oak that we worked hard to protect during building. Rather than actually investigate, he answered my concerns and protests with \"it just must be evaporation.\" The beds he planted around our new addition were raised higher than the foundation and piled against the house-sides. The job, bid in February to take approximately 3 weeks, had at last reached the point of the plant installation in May. The heavy irrigation needed to sustain the plants seeped into the subfloor of our new addition, ruining our new wood floors and a 2' x 40' section of interior sheetrock.Our builder rectified this promptly (all new wood floors and sheet rock..what mess) and negotiated with Hitt's insurance for replacement costs. Similarly, as a direct result of Hitt's poorly considered and executed work, three 40' Live oaks around which we designed the garden were drowned: the tree trunks were buried 6-8\" in a layer of mulch and soil. This material plus the heavy watering regime mentioned above smothered the trees. Maddeningly, I knew better and even told him I thought that the soil was too high, but Mr. Hitt assured me I was wrong and that the trees would be fine (he'd done the same thing plenty of previous times and the trees were always fine, he said [in fact, no one else I ever consulted could concur]). It took approximately one month before we insisted he take the soil back down to the original level, but the damage was done. And the trees we had repeatedly and specifically told anyone and everyone involved in the long and complicated construction process were a priority died within five months. Drainage was inadequate in patio area and needed tweaking at a cost of an additional $2,500 (he wasn't taking any responsibility and complained) To add insult to this HUGE injury to our back yard, we had to fight about replacement costs and responsibility. It got pretty ugly. Hitt was rude, unapologetic, became very defensive and bullying and, towards the end while \"punching out\" and finishing details, became very sloppy, unresponsive and forced us to ask for small service details that should have been completed w/o question to begin with. We eventually settled with $7,5000 for the total loss of 3 large oaks just to put an end to this bad business. This is an edited, so by no means complete, accounting of the inattention and incompetence that typified the Hitt's experience. This firm probably does a great business in tract-home and spec installations in this boom town, but don't let him near your home or garden."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/tx/college-station/hitt%27s-landscape-and-maintenance-reviews-5987490.htm"},"position":3}]}

FAQs for mulch and topsoil service projects in Iola, TX
Topsoil costs from $12 to $55 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. For example, screened black dirt will cost about $15 per cubic yard. Loam (soil composed of sand, silt, and clay) costs about $17 per cubic yard. Standard screened topsoil costs about $20 per cubic yard. The type of topsoil you need depends on your landscaping plans.
Mulch costs anywhere from $30 to $150 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. On the inexpensive end, red and black mulch are about $35 to $40 per cubic yard, and are typically made from recycled waste wood like shredded old pallets or deck material. Cedar, cypress, and rubber mulch cost anywhere from $100 to $120 per cubic yard. A pro can help you determine the type of mulch most suitable for your landscaping needs.
Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch. Over time, any decorative wood mulch will simply decompose under the topsoil.
No, mulch itself does not necessarily attract termites even though it’s usually made of shredded wood. Some types of mulch like cedar or cypress resist termites because they’re toxic or unappetizing to the wood munchers. However, when the mulch is deep enough, say three inches or more, it creates a perfect habitat for insects of all kinds to build nests.
Although it’s not required to lay anything under mulch, it can help to put landscape fabric or plastic weed barrier down and lay mulch on top. The barrier helps keep weeds from growing up through your mulch. It also helps keep rodents and insects from burrowing into the ground underneath.
