Calvin did a very nice job on the ceiling and crown. Just wish he would have taken 5 minutes to loosen the light fixture and fan cones instead of mudding over the edges of them. Something I will have to deal with when I replace them. Beyond that I have to say his work is shoddy. He did come back and redo some things to try to make them better. But the only way to fix the biggest problems would be to tear it all out and start over. The top cabinets from one side of the room to the other are not the same height. Standard distance between countertop and top cabinets is 18". For some reason he installed mine at 18 1/2 on one side and 19 1/4 on the side where the sink is, which is the side I use every day. I am short and that inch+ makes a huge difference to reach the second shelf. But I guess I will have to learn to live with it. The countertops are too narrow and do not cover the lower cabinets so there was no drip edge. Calvin is paying to have the people that installed the laminate come back and install a trim piece on the front to extend the countertop out over the lower cabinets. That is scheduled to be done in aprox. two weeks. My one big splurge was my backsplash tile, which is a brushed metal mosaic - $15.00 a square foot. Some of it looks pretty good but in many places you can see the interlocking seams and the little pieces stick out. Some as much as 1/8 inch and are not straight. He did come back and remove the worst ones and put them back on. For which I had to buy another $15.00 tile. He said he would pay for it but didn't. It is a little better, still shows and will never be a good tile job. Once again something I will have to live with. I am going to have to re-grout the tile due to shrinkage and then seal it. When I ask him about sealing it he said he put sealer in the grout. Everything I read online about that says that it doesn't work. I ask him to seal it properly and he refused to do it. So guess I'll be doing that too. There is a 1/2" unfinished gap between the backsplash tile and the top cabinets. So I bought some trim and primed and painted it to cover up that mess...the trim and paint cost another $20.00 out of my pocket to cover up his mistake. One cabinet door is on backwards. Once again something I will have to live. The island hood is 1 1/2" off center over the cooktop and not properly installed. He cut the sheetrock out and attached the plate to boards in the attic then patched around it. The plate that the hood attaches to should go on top of the rock....per the instructions that came with it. Because he got in a hurry and scheduled the laminate before the oven unit was installed there is a 1/2" gap between the countertop and wall oven cabinet and between the backsplash and wall oven cabinet. His fix for that is a 3/4" x 3/4" board that he cut from a cabinet spacer to cover it. The end is bare wood that I need to do something with. Not sure how I'm going to make that look decent. There are numerous smaller mistakes....way too many to mention and explain on here. I have taken pictures of all of them. A few of them he corrected or at least tried to make better but most cannot be fixed. Like a screw hole thru the face of a cabinet...now filled with putty and looks pretty good but still shows. Another one thru the side of the wall oven unit....same fix. All of the nail holes in the toe kick and cabinet crown show. Guess that's suppose to be my job too. The holes can be filled with the putty but it is something he should have done. I paid him to do the job. I should not have to do his finish work. Two pieces of floor tile needed put in where the old cabinets came out and the new did not cover. He put the tile in but did not grout it. Told me I could do that. I had to wipe down every cabinet and drawer, inside and out, because he put the cabinets in before he textured the ceiling and did not cover them. He told me I needed to clean up that mess because he forgot and painted the ceiling and I was suppose to. He said it would be a trade off because he forgot and did it so now to make things fair I needed to clean up his mess and put the knobs and pulls on the cabinets. So I did. He did not paint the ceiling. He put that cheap Pro-X PVA primer on it that leaves it looking gray. I wanted it bright white so I painted it. There are numerous scuffs and scratches on the new cabinets and one on the new wall oven and places that splintered when he drilled the holes for the knobs and pulls.
Several times throughout this remodel I tried to talk to Calvin about some of these things that were not right. Two times he told me I was being too picky. Once he replied with "Are you trying to tell me how to do my job?" And twice he accused me of not trusting him.
I am not saying these things because I am picky and anal about things. I have flipped four houses in the past, worked with a lot of contractors from all trades and have done some of this kind of work myself. I had another contractor come and look at this job. He agreed these things are not right and even noticed some mistakes that I had not noticed yet. He sits on an arbitration board for contractors. His suggestion was to sue for the damages.
I now have a $30,000.00 kitchen remodel that looks like it was done by an amateur instead of a contractor. Sorry Calvin, you are a very nice person and I really like you but for this kitchen remodel I needed a contractor with experience in kitchen remodels....not just a nice person.
Here is my follow up to what has transpired since I wrote the above review. I filed a complaint with Angie?s list and Harbor Renovations refused any kind of settlement. Instead, I got a threatening email from him that said if I did not delete the above review ?He would move forward with his options?. And he did. HE CANCELLED THE ORDER TO PAY FOR THE BULLNOSE FOR THE CONTER TOP TRIM that would fix the countertops that he built to narrow. Looks like I will be paying to have that done because the countertop definitely needs an overhang to keep spills from running down the front of my cabinets and ruining them. So due to my honest review, I lost more on this deal. No wonder people give false reviews on here. Most people that are being threatened will give in and change their reviews. I WILL NOT! I gave an honest review. I have lots of pictures and I will be happy to show anyone the mistakes and shoddy work. I forwarded a copy of the email to Angie's List....that gained me nothing either. Now I?m trying to decide if I should file a complaint with the BBB or take Harbor Renovations to small claims court.

He got back to me promptly and told me he would get with me in a couple of weeks to come see what I needed to have done. Then called and few weeks after that to tell me he was tied up on a job and would not be able to start work on my kitchen until January 2015. I told him I could wait until then. Never heard another word so I sent him a message through Angie's List the week between Christmas and New Years. He came that week and looked at what needed to be done and told me he would have his cabinet maker come the next week and take measurements and discuss with me what I wanted. Also, he told me that it would be the middle of March before he could start on my project. That week went by and not a word. The next week Hugh called and told me his cabinet man was not returning his calls and he would keep trying to contact him and would get him over the next week. So I gave it another week...still nothing so I gave up and called another contractor. I still have not heard from Hugh or his cabinet man and it's January 20th. Today I sent him a message via Angie's List to tell him I would not be needing his services. I cannot tell you about his price or quality of work since he didn't find my kitchen remodel important enough for him. I can tell you that his professionalism, punctuality and responsiveness definitely do not meet my standards for a contractor. And, I'm pleased to tell you that my kitchen remodel is finally scheduled for the middle of March with my new contractor.

Mr. Haynes put his and quot;helperand quot; on the minor stuff. Told me in the beginning it should take him approx. 18 hrs. to complete the plugs, switches, fans, and light. Sounded like a lot of time for such minor work for an electrician but I accepted it. I ended up paying him for 28.5 hrs of labor for this kid at $53.00 an hr. I was told by two neighbors that he spent most of his time outside talking on his cell phone. And, there was a 6 pack of beer in the refrigerator when the job was started and none when the job was over (they were the only ones that had a key to the house at that time). He cut 3 holes the size of a silver dollar in the bottom of a cabinet to install 1 wire for the light fixture. I had to repair the holes. I told them I wanted to save 1 of the existing ceiling fans because I wanted the blades and globes.......that was gone when the job was done. When I questioned it he said it was a miscommunication between him and the helper and it got thrown away. I ask him to label the inside of the new panel so I would know which breaker went to what. All of then were labeled and quot;plugsand quot; except the 220 breakers. Very sloppy scribbling and ruined the label. When I brought up the missing fan, missing beer and holes in the cabinet Mr. Haynes said he was sorry and that he would talk to his helper. I feel this was wrong and he should have taken responsibility for for his employee.
Needless to say, I will not recommend Haynes Electric to anyone and I will not use them in the future. On the plus side, I think Mr. Haynes is an ok electrician and seems to know what he is doing and if he is doing the work himself he might be ok. As I look at my paperwork from him it shows $1,510.50 for the kids labor, materials of $408.71 ( supplied all the fans and light fixture), main service $900.00 and $270.00 for the additional 200 A ext. breaker.

Rather than drill holes thru the studs to re-route plumbing for the new faucet, he cut the studs out of the wall. Rather than re-route the PVC plumbing to allow for the new larger diverter, he splayed the pipes out and put them in a bind. When I asked him to cut the pipes and re-route them with 90's, he used smaller pipe, which has caused loss of water pressure immensely. He installed the hardi-backer wrong side and facing out. He left huge cracks and holes where the hardi-backer sheets met and did not seal the cracks and holes. He ruined the cartridge in my brand new $450 Kohler diverter by not removing the cartridge before soldering on the diverter. The cartridge is plastic so it melted. He also melted the plastic template for the diverter. When I asked him for the documentation that had come with the Kohler plumbing he said there wasn't any. That day after he left, I found all of the documentation in the bottom of the garbage can he'd been using. It was covered in food & garbage, but I cleaned it up and I still have it. He had said he could build custom cabinets from the beginning. Then out of the blue, he called me from a cabinet shop 30 miles away one day and said he was going to have them make the cabinets. When he would agree to pick something up to install, I would always tell him to get excellent quality things. Invariably, he would arrive with the cheapest, cheesiest thing he could find. The heater/fan that I wanted installed is a good example. The one he brought was a $7 flimsy thing. I returned it and bought a Nutone brand with a heater and exhaust fan for $80. I couldn't depend on him to use good judgment on anything. The day I caught him cutting the studs out of my wall, I had him put new studs back in (luckily, I had a couple of spare 2 x 4s in the garage) to avoid compromising the integrity of my home's structure. I then paid him and told him that he and I would have to \"part ways\" because I had lost confidence in him. He left after he cleaned up a big mess he'd made. Or at least I THOUGHT he was cleaning up. I sat in the living room waiting for him to clean up his mess in the bathroom. For a few months after that, I kept having plumbing problems. The toilets and showers kept backing up. We are in the country and have a septic system. I called and had the tanks pumped out. Then the plumber came and ran an auger thru the lines. A block of wood about 4 x 2 inches was knocked out of the drain by the auger and fell into the tank. I recognized it. It was one of the pieces of the studs George had cut out with a reciprocating saw. I guess George Godin was angry at me for letting him go, so he decided to cause me some trouble. What he didn't understand is that we are on a septic system and if anyone puts anything down my drain, I can easily find out what it was. So George, if you read this...I know what you did. And the plumber said the only way that block of wood could have gotten down my drain was for someone to shove it in there."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/tx/corpus-christi/tmc-construction-reviews-459480.htm"},"position":9}]}
