The lifespan of crawl space insulation depends on how well you maintain your insulation and the type of insulation. Fiberglass will need replacing every 15 to 20 years on average if you don't have a vapor barrier in place. If you do have vapor barriers in place, then your insulation could last much longer. Spray foam insulation can last anywhere from 80 to 100 years. 

Adding insulation to ceilings is an excellent way to increase the energy efficiency of your home. If your home's layout is such that you need insulation in the ceilings rather than in the roof, it's likely that at least some insulation already exists in the space. However, each additional inch of insulation you can add boosts the R-value by between 2.2 and 4.2.

You don’t need to remove old insulation before adding new insulation. As long as the old insulation is still in good shape—not wet, physically damaged, or moldy—then you can stack new insulation on top of old insulation to get a compounding effect. You can also mix different types of insulation, like adding blown-in insulation around existing fiberglass batt insulation or installing rigid insulation boards over rafters in your attic that already have batt insulation installed. If your existing insulation is very old or damaged, though, you’ll likely see more benefit from removing it and replacing it instead.

Most homeowners installing blown-in insulation as a one-off DIY project should simply rent a blower. They tend to be very heavy, and contractor-grade machines can cost $13,000 to $16,000.

Adding too much insulation can have detrimental effects on your home and on your wallet. Where you live will determine the optimal amount of insulation for your home and in your ceilings. Adding more than the recommended amounts can cause airflow problems that can lead to moisture trouble. You may also spend more than necessary by adding too much insulation to the point that it'll become unrecoverable through your energy bills.
