"Mike Walts at The Shop delivered an exceptional experience from start to finish. He came in and worked with my wife on several issues around the house, including an electrical problem with a ceiling fan that multiple other contractors couldn’t figure out. Mike diagnosed it quickly, explained the issue clearly, and had it resolved in no time. He also installed several new lighting fixtures, and the upgrade was immediately noticeable — clean work, solid craftsmanship, and a huge improvement to the space. My wife said he was polite, professional, and easy to work with the entire time. On top of the electrical work, Mike repaired a smoker door that required welding and installed a new firebox handle. The quality of the repair was excellent, and it’s working better than it has in years. Mike is skilled, efficient, and genuinely takes pride in his work. The Shop absolutely deserves 5 stars, and we’ll be calling him again for future projects."

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

A chimney liner isn’t required for an outdoor fireplace; you don’t technically need one if the masonry chimney uses the proper dimensions and is built to code. However, a chimney liner does serve as a protective coating for the flue. Adding a liner could improve performance, safety, and durability. In short, while not necessary, it wouldn’t hurt.

You can let a fire burn out in a fireplace as long as you or someone else will stick around to monitor it until it goes completely out. This may take several hours. To prepare, stop adding fuel to the fire well before you’re ready to call it a night. If you’re using the fireplace for warmth, you’ll want to cover up in some blankets as the flame dies down.

No. Removing the cause of concern will only lead to deeper concern. You cannot use any fire-powered appliance like a fireplace or furnace without an escape route for the smoke and fumes. If you remove the flue intending to repair or replace it, you should only use the fireplace, wood stove, or furnace once the flue is in working order. If you cannot replace the flue you have removed, call a chimney repair professional immediately.

A smoke alarm that beeps periodically, often every 30 to 60 seconds, usually indicates a low battery. The first step is to replace the battery. If this doesn't solve the problem, try resetting the alarm. However, beeping can also signal other issues, such as dust buildup in the sensors or the unit reaching the end of its life. Different beep patterns can mean different things; for example, multiple beeps might indicate an issue with a combination carbon monoxide detector, while a continuous, loud alarm means smoke has been detected. If a new battery doesn't stop the beeping, it's best to consult your alarm's manual, call a professional, or replace the unit.

You can’t gauge the lifetime of a fire door like you could, say, an engine. Fire doors should be checked at least once every six months to ensure there are no signs of degradation like leaks, holes, water damage, termite damage, or anything else that might compromise the functionality of the door’s fire resistance. Check your smoke detectors while you’re at it.
