Beyond having an inspection, it’s important to do chimney maintenance at least annually to be certain the chimney is safe to use. Cleaning the flue of any built-up particles, creosote, and soot reduces the risk of fire. Fortunately, the cost of hiring a pro to do a chimney inspection often includes a chimney cleaning, so you may not have an extra expense for maintenance.

Signs that your chimney may need to be replaced include visible damage like cracks in the structure, bricks, or mortar, as well as crumbling or flaking mortar and loose bricks. Leaks, dampness, discoloration, and efflorescence (a white, stain-like substance on the bricks) are also key indicators of water damage, which can compromise the chimney's safety. Addressing these problems is essential, as a chimney in this condition may be at risk of collapsing and causing major damage to your home. A full replacement costs about $10,000 on average, but can range from $3,100 to $15,400.

To reset an electric fireplace, first shut the unit off using the control panel or remote control. Make sure the unit is entirely shut down, then unplug it from the power outlet. Wait five to 10 minutes, then plug the fireplace back in and turn it on. This process should reset the electric fireplace. After resetting, make sure to set the thermostat, timer, and other programmable settings to suit your preferences.
