"Genie Bath System did a fantastic job doing some renovations to make my master bath more Special Needs accessible. Widening the entrance to the commode, updating some wiring for the ceiling fan, and best of all taking out a standup shower and Linen closet and putting in a new double-wide roll-in shower for my daughter's caster wheeled bathroom seat. They ran across a few unanticipated issues with the wiring and never complained or tried to get more money. We have been using the new bathroom for a few months now and the difference is amazing. Previously the process for potty and shower was 4 transfers for her, picking up the chair into the shower, and me standing outside the shower to bathe her. Now just 2 transfers, she can roll from the potty straight into the shower, and the shower can be closed! It is actually fun to take showers now !!! Thank you Genie Bath Systems."

"EMJ (Ruben) were very professional, always on time with great attitudes, and always smiling. The work was superb they worked with me until I was completely happy. I love my new bathroom! We have had them back for a few other odd jobs fixing the crown molding for one. Will have them back for anything else we decide to do here in our home. Love their work and their work ethics. Give them a call you will not be disappointed. Donna Mahan"

"David was excellent to work with. He has great communication with the customer and the people he works with. I had 2 bathroom remodels with granite installation and porcelain tile installation. David has great suggestions to accomplish the finished look you are after. Could not have been more pleased with the work and the condition of my house afterwards"

"We hired Mr. David Pena from A Cut Above Woodworks to fix a couple of shelves that had fallen down in my wife’s wardrobe closet, and he did a phenomenal job. Mr. Pena was highly professional, meticulous, and efficient. He even went above and beyond by adding additional shelving, which my wife absolutely loves—you can never have too much storage space! By the time he was finished, it felt like we had a completely customized closet. We highly recommend him and truly appreciate his exceptional craftsmanship, expertise, and professionalism."

Closets questions, answered by experts

A standard walk-in closet has dimensions of 7 feet by 10 feet at a minimum and an average of 100 square feet. Remember that the dimensions of the closet aren’t necessarily the usable space. This means that a 100-square-foot walk-in closet with shelves on each wall and an island may only have a walkable area of 50 square feet or less. Make sure you consider the effect of additions when you plan the room—mockups are a great idea.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.

Plywood offers excellent stability and strength for drawer construction. Baltic birch plywood provides a premium appearance, while standard hardwood plywood offers good value. Solid wood works well but requires more attention to grain direction and seasonal movement.

Yes, adding a built-in or custom closet generally increases your home's value and makes it more attractive to potential buyers. A well-designed closet adds utility, organization, and a touch of luxury, which are appealing selling points. Most homeowners see a return on investment (ROI) of 50% to 60%; for example, a custom closet can add about $1,000 to your home's value on average. The specific ROI depends on the type, with custom walk-in closets typically providing more value than reach-in closets. However, to maximize value, ensure the closet doesn't significantly detract from the room's usable square footage. Converting an entire room into a closet can actually lower your home's value. Similarly, using overly lavish materials may not recoup their cost. A good strategy is to add a closet that takes square footage from a non-living area, such as a garage, to create a mudroom closet.
