It depends on the type of tree. Typically, late spring on the cusp of winter is ideal for trees about to emerge from dormancy and produce new buds. That said, late fall is ideal for certain deciduous trees prone to bleeding sap. Avoid trimming trees in early spring, when they’re prone to disease.

Trees should be pruned every two to five years, depending on its age and type. Young trees should be inspected and pruned every two to three years. Mature trees should be inspected and trimmed every three to five years, and fruit trees should be pruned annually with a careful eye on seasonal growth. Evergreens typically don’t need pruning, unless branches or limbs are damaged, diseased, or harboring pests.

Burning a tree stump can be effective, but it comes with safety considerations and isn’t always best for every situation. It's essential to check local regulations and assess the safety risks involved. Stumps that are near wooden structures or other non-moveable flammable objects aren’t good candidates for burning due to the risk of the fire spreading. A tree can grow back from its stump, but full regrowth is unlikely (especially for more stubborn conifer trees).
