We are a family business and have been since 1979 when Dan White decidied to take a chance and start his own company making window screens and doing odds and ends handyman projects. As time went on Dan began to focus and specialize in making, repairing, and servicing screens, glass doors, and screen porches. I (Doug White) began working full time with my Dad in 1984. We have always taken pride in our workmanship and service, and will continue to do so.

"Doug White answered my telephone inquiry on same day and gave me an estimate two days later. We then requested and received HOA approval and gave Doug the go ahead with work. Doug emailed us with a time estimate for work to be performed; total time from start to finish was approximately six weeks. Doug had estimated seven to eight weeks but was able to work our project in to his work schedule because he had another job in same vicinity. We are totally pleased with his work; he has also screened all of our windows. Totally recommend Dan's Screens & Things."

A vacuum with a hose attachment or a lint roller can easily remove dust from your window screen. Pressure washing window screens is another option, but you should make sure you have the appropriate nozzle and pressure setting to avoid doing extensive damage to your window.

Most window screens hold up for about 10 to 12 years—assuming they’re made from quality materials and get decent care. Fiberglass and aluminum are common, but their lifespan varies depending on how much weather they’re exposed to. Constant sun or rough winters can speed up wear and tear, while regular cleaning and basic window maintenance can help them last longer. Damage from pets or a rogue tree branch can also shorten their life. If the mesh is torn, the frame’s bent, or they’ve faded to a dull gray, it’s probably time to swap them out for something new.

Tears, holes, or difficulty in opening and closing suggest a need for repair.

If you’d rather repair your screen door mesh than replace it, you can patch it. Purchase a mesh patch for screen doors with small holes or tears, especially if the mesh is pretty new. Hardware stores and websites sell mesh patches that are easy to apply with an adhesive or a warm hair dryer. Keep in mind that repairs won’t look as aesthetically pleasing in most cases as a full replacement. 

If your winter looks like heavy snow, freezing rain, or frigid temperatures, taking your screens out for the season can be a great way to avoid mesh damage or bent frames. Ice can build up and put pressure on the screen, especially in older or aluminum frames. Removing them also lets in more natural light during those shorter winter days and makes it easier to keep your windows clean. In warmer climates, it’s less about protection and more about preference. Some homeowners like the clearer view while others leave them in for convenience. Either way works—it depends on your setup and what you value more.
