Updated: I'm leaving the original review below, since it did go well, and as noted, I hired Rick to replace several other doors. This didn't go nearly as well, and I feel it's only fair to amend the review.

The good: The installations are solid, and the doors function well. Rick is definitely a craftsman. He's very punctual once you've got an appointment. And he's a generally nice guy. 

The bad: He's not very organized -- possibly just overwhelmed with jobs and lacking office support  -- and not good about returning calls. Also, the "buy everything yourself for installation" approach gets very expensive, very fast. He wasn't as clear as I would have preferred that the quoted cost was NOT a flat fee, but an initial estimate.

He's also not great about details/thinking ahead. Cutting through concrete is far messier than I knew; we could have mitigated the mess if he'd pointed out what was going to be involved. There were some not-very-practical choices with molding made that needed to be fixed later. And he made minor error in installing the french doors (didn't read the instructions properly) which turned into a six-week-long wild goose chase as I tried to get the manufacturer to replace a part that wasn't missing, just not installed right. Once that was sorted out, it still took weeks to get a hold of him to make a 10-minute fix.  

Some of the problems with the installations were unavoidable (old termite damage) and some were my fault (misunderstanding the materials needed), but overall, it could have gone a lot better. The first job went great, though.

Initial Review:

Went extremely well. Rick had originally looked at several problem doors as part of another firm's "door maintenance" special and fixed the main entry door which tended to stick. The other doors really needed to be replaced; Rick walked me through the issues and a detailed list of the supplies needed. He also gave me some great tips on other small fixes around the house

I purchased what was necessary for the exterior garage door, which was in the worst shape. (The steel door was actually bent, the frame around it cracked, and if you actually managed to get it closed, it took a pretty good shoulder block to reopen...) Called Rick (now with his own firm) to install the new door. He is very precise and methodical, and the new door is probably stronger than the brick wall around it. He was very happy to explain exactly what he was doing and why, and made my life easier by suggesting specific hardware.

Here's the thing: I'm sure I could have gotten the door put in faster and a littler cheaper by letting the guys from the big-box store install it. But I'm sick of dealing with the fallout of the "faster, cheaper" approach, and it feels like 90% of the problems/repairs to this house have been caused or complicated by installers/builders taking shortcuts. I'd rather pay a little more for somebody who really knows what they're doing, takes pride in their work, and doesn't just come up with a slapdash fix to get around problems.

I'm definitely having Rick install the other three doors that need replacing.
