"James was great, he came out to measure and provided an estimate on paper which I really liked. Too often we have had people come out and just verbally tell us the cost without  detailing specifics. James had all of the measurements with drawings and cost per screen. James also provided swatches of different solar screen weaves and colors for us to choose from. Install was quick and the screens look great, so much so that our neighbors have asked for his information. "

"Jared Yandell and his crew at Atx Fence & Deck did a fantastic job! Jared was competitive in pricing and we can verify this as we had numerous estimates. He was extremely patient with us as we asked many questions being 1st time fence buyers. Jared was punctual, professional and he and his crew arrived exactly on time. They worked all through the day and finished the project in one day just as they said they would. This company does high quality work with high quality materials. Jared and his crew are highly skilled with years of experience and perfectionists! The fence they built is beautiful and will withstand the test of time (dogs and children). We would use them again with no hesitation!"

"Alex and his crew are always professional, kind, timely and they produced excellent results. He's very responsive, doesn't mind when you change your mind, had answers for all my questions, and his bid was much lower than the next option I was considering. I had him build a porch roof and also repair and repaint some drywall in my kitchen and living room ceiling, replace and repaint rotted fascia in the front, and remove, reframe and install a new door to the back yard. The work is of excellent quality and I will definitely hire them again!"

Awnings questions, answered by experts

Acrylic, polyester, and vinyl are common options. Choose based on durability, UV resistance, and style.

Yes, you can convert a fabric awning to a metal one. You just need to swap the fabric for metal panels, which are more durable and weather-resistant. However, the support frame will probably need reinforcement to handle the added weight. You should consult a pro to address any structural concerns.

To ensure the installation process goes smoothly, it's wise to ask a potential pro several questions. Key topics to cover include:

  • Licensing and Insurance: Do you have a professional license and insurance to perform this work? This is crucial as installing an awning into a home's exterior can be a complex job.

  • Cost Estimate: What was the price of similar jobs you've completed? Awning installation costs can vary based on size, design, and location, so this helps establish a general price range.

  • Project Timeline: How long will this project take to complete? Getting an estimated timeline provides peace of mind, even though unforeseen hurdles can occur.

  • Building Permits: Will I need a building permit for this project, and who is responsible for obtaining it? An experienced local contractor will be knowledgeable about local rules and regulations.

  • References and Portfolio: Do you have references from previous clients or photos of completed projects? Speaking with past clients and seeing previous work can give you insight into their experience and the quality of their work.

It’s best to keep your awning retracted if winds are 25 miles per hour or more to make sure your awning doesn’t sustain irreparable damage due to wind. Some awnings can take winds up to 30 miles per hour without any damage, but it’s best to consult the manufacturer’s guidance. A good rule of thumb is if it’s too windy for you to comfortably stand outside, it’s time to bring the awning in.

The longest-lasting awning materials include vinyl, polycarbonate, and polyester for their durability and cleanability. Other materials like canvas and metal can last a long time, but may wear out faster. The key to getting the longest life from your awning material is to maintain it properly by cleaning yearly, keeping debris from gathering on it, and protecting it during stormy weather or high winds by retracting it or moving it to a protected area.
