"Steve recently completed multiple projects at our home. He did a fantastic job. While repairing fascia in several places, he found a structural mistake made when our Dining Room addition was built. The support piece for the fascia where the addition met the original house was poorly designed and attached, resulting in a sagging, out of line and potentially dangerous situation. Steve custom created an out-rigger that looks great and solved the problem. He also installed 2 new windows, caulked and prepped the house for paint and painted the house and trim. A complicated job, very well done. I've already recommended him to several neighbors and I'm working up a 2018 project list for next Spring. Steve will be my first resource for any projects on our house."

Caulking Services questions, answered by experts

Handypeople usually don’t hold trade licenses, so they typically aren’t qualified to tackle projects involving installing or making alterations to plumbing or electrical lines. Below are some jobs that a handyperson usually won’t be able to complete:

  • Installing plumbing for a new kitchen or bathroom

  • Replacing plumbing pipes

  • Installing or repairing septic systems

  • Running new electrical wiring

  • Installing a subpanel

A handyperson can perform a wide variety of home improvement and repair projects. Common jobs include painting, cleaning gutters, assembling new furniture, and replacing fixtures like cabinets or lights. They can also handle more complex tasks such as installing a dishwasher, fixing minor plumbing leaks, refinishing wood floors, and replacing doors. Generally, a handyperson is ideal for any project that does not require a specific license or certification, such as those related to major plumbing, electrical, or structural work, which should be handled by a licensed tradesperson.

In most states, handypeople do not need to be licensed to perform simple home repair tasks and smaller jobs. When projects exceed specific cost amounts, however, ranging from $500 in California to $50,000 in other states, some municipalities consider them to be contractors, meaning they need to be licensed. To learn if your handyperson should be licensed to work on your job, contact your local governing body or state contractors’ licensing board before starting any work.

You can find a reliable handyperson by looking at professionals in your area and ruling out companies with poor reviews online. Next, check each handyperson on the Better Business Bureau to see if they have a history of complaints and rule out those that do. Finally, you can contact each handyperson to ask the following qualifying questions:

  • What is your hourly rate?

  • Are there any jobs you can’t tackle?

  • Are you fully insured?

  • How many years of experience do you have?

  • Do you have references I can contact?

Hiring a handyperson offers several benefits. They can save you time and hassle by completing tasks you may not have the time or experience to do yourself. A key advantage is ensuring the project is done correctly, which can prevent future issues and save money in the long run. For projects that pose safety risks, hiring an experienced professional is a much safer option. Additionally, handypeople are often more available for smaller jobs that larger contractors may not have the schedule for.
