"J&R Trucking were very helpful with demolition and removal of deteriorated portions of an old residence. They provided a detailed quote up front and visited the site in advance to understand tools needed and access issues. Additionally J&R put me in touch with other local tradespeople for additional services. This is a professional and reliable company."

"Yes, he came right on time, told him if he could get this amount of trash out under an hour and I was surprised he got it done in 30 minutes. I appreciate the hard work he did and let me throw some added on garbage."

"This service was quick to respond, punctual and efficient. Minimal interaction necessary. I made a request for pickup, by the time I got done cooking dinner, I looked outside and noticed everything cleared and hauled off. Greatly appreciated!"

"I have tried paying friends, neighbors and nephews to remove a huge play set from the backyard, which has become a total eyesore. I had finally had enough and called a few junk removal businesses who gave me outrageous estimates due to the set being a sole item and below their usual minimum for removal. Finally, I found this company who offered a reasonable price (outstanding compared to the rest) and even better, they squeezed in the pickup for later that day. The boys were a great laugh and made the problem history in less than 15 minutes from arrival but even better- I can love my backyard again."

Garbage Collection questions, answered by experts

No, you do not need a garbage disposal to have a dishwasher. A dishwasher will work without one, and while it's rare to see a home with a dishwasher that doesn't have a disposal, it is possible. The two appliances pair well and are often installed together because a disposal simplifies meal cleanup.

However, your dishwasher should not be used as a replacement for a garbage disposal. Subjecting it to continuous food leftovers can lead to major clogs. If you choose not to install a garbage disposal, you should thoroughly rinse your plates or scrape excess food into the trash or a compost pile before loading them into the dishwasher to prevent plumbing issues.

On average, a garbage disposal can last anywhere from 7 to 12 years, with many models functioning well for about 10 years. With heavy usage, a motor may last a minimum of five years, while grinding plates will wear down over time. It's generally a good idea to consider a replacement if your unit is approaching the 10-year mark. Other signs that it's time for a new disposal include frequent leaks, persistent clogs, lingering odors, lack of power, or unusual noises. If your unit is not that old, it's worth investigating if a less expensive part, like a rubber seal or a loose hose, is causing the issue.

Your garbage disposal will only affect the health of your septic tank if you’re using it too frequently, or filling it with organic waste that doesn’t fully break down. If the tank fills up with too many solids, the bacteria won’t have enough time to consume it before more is added, which can lead to an overflow in the drain field. Your tank will need to be pumped more frequently with excessive or improper garbage disposal use.

There are many maintenance and repair issues that lead to a malfunctioning garbage disposal. Regular clogs place wear and tear on the motors, leading to an eventual shutdown. Electrical issues at the breaker, wall outlet, or disposal itself can fry the unit. The most common cause is simply a worn-down motor. These motors can only handle so much use before powering down for good.

While the drain connection for a garbage disposal is nearly universal and fits standard sink drain holes of 3 1/2 to 4 inches, the size of the disposal unit itself is not. You must have enough space in the cabinet underneath your sink to accommodate the disposal's housing. A larger model may not fit in a compact cabinet or if the existing plumbing is arranged in an unusual way. Before buying a new garbage disposal, measure the available space under your sink. If you are replacing an old unit, it's often easiest to choose a new model of a similar size.
