"It went very well... he was very easy to work with and he went beyond just the appraisals - taking the time to educate us, not only about our pieces, but the jewelry industry in general. He tried to help us figure out how to get top dollar for our items based on his experience and expertise. Two notes for future clients: (1) make sure you can read the actual hand-written appraisal, as - not being familiar with "jewelry lingo", I can not read/understand some of what he wrote which is critical when trying to describe an item to potential buyers. (2) He charged $10, for each item - so, in our case that was $40 - to take "high quality photos" (taken with his phone) to email to us. But the photos we paid for came out no better than what we could have done ourselves with our own phones. I had to edit his photos to get the depth of color and details of the pieces - his were very light and you couldn't see the details. Both of these issues are just to give potential customers a Heads Up. Other than those two issues - it was a great experience and education. I am very glad we got to meet him; he shows all signs that he not only knows his business inside and out, he also came across as very honest - which is key when doing this sort of thing... he knows an enormous amount about the entire jewelry / precious & semi-precious gems / gold & silver / craftsmanship industry. I look forward to continue to work with him in the future and would highly recommend him to anyone.

Antiques and Jewelry Appraisals questions, answered by experts

While there’s technically no limit to the dollar amount you can borrow for a home addition, the standard limit is around 80% of the value the addition is expected to add to your home. That means you could feasibly borrow up to $80,000 if an appraiser determines that the addition or bump out will add $100,000 in value to your property. You might also be limited by your debt-to-income ratio or credit score.

Yes, home appraisers look at your windows when appraising your property to determine the market value of your home. They’ll factor in the type of windows, quality, condition, whether or not there are screens covering the windows, frame materials, size, insulation, and more to come up with an unbiased property assessment.

Depending on the size of the home, the appraisal itself can take several hours. After the appraiser’s visit is complete, it can take between a few days and a few weeks to get the report back. This timeline is largely dependent on the appraiser’s workload, research requirements, efficiency, and other factors.

Yes, built-in bookshelves can be worth the investment and can add value to your home, especially when constructed from high-quality, timeless materials like luxury hardwood. They offer a practical and stylish storage solution that utilizes wall space effectively. While they cost more than store-bought units, the custom fit and potential to increase your property's resale value make them a desirable feature for many buyers, particularly for homeowners with large book collections. For the best return on investment, consider having them professionally built.

In most cases, selling a home in as-is condition will lead to a sale price that’s somewhere between 10% and 30% lower than normal. However, it’s often worthwhile to sell at a loss because the alternative would be to pay for the repairs yourself, which could end up costing you more. Even if they didn’t, selling as-is saves you from the time and energy you’d spend coordinating the repairs.
