With an influx of roofing contractors in this industry, our goal is to raise the bar to a new standard. Through using an honest and consultative approach, we plan to exceed your expectations and provide the industries' best practices. In the past, most home and business owners did not have a roofing contractor on speed-dial, and that is something we plan to change! We are honored you chose JWC General Contractors and look forward to the opportunity to serve you now and for all your future needs.

"Working with Ronnie and JWC was a great pleasure. We have used other companies before but the experience here was night and day. They helped me understand the process better, did all of the leg work in getting everything done and did a quality job. Would highly recommend and will continue to do business with Ronnie on the next roof."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Your porch could be crumbling due to poor installation, freeze and thaw cycles, or intense pressure washing or sandblasting. If your concrete was poured and cured improperly, moisture can seep into the concrete. When the water freezes and thaws, it causes stress to the structure, leading to cracks and crumbling. If you pressure wash concrete on too high of a setting or sandblast the surface, the concrete can also crumble.

While the terms deck and porch are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct home features. Porches offer a roof that protects from the elements when coming and going from the house. Generally, porches are on the front of your home. On the other hand, decks are generally built in the backyard of a home and offer no roof or protection from the elements, like rain or snow. Porches typically require less maintenance and upkeep thanks to the roof, but both features require regular cleaning and repairs to maintain good condition.

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

There are several methods of supporting a balcony. Very small balconies, such as Juliet balconies that don't include any usable floor space and don't need to support human weight, may simply require supporting bolts drilled into the home's structure. Cantilevering is a method that requires no additional exterior supports, and larger balconies typically need posts and footings to carry the weight from below.
