"I called Adam for an estimate to trim 2 trees before hurricane season.  He showed as he was in the neighborhood.  I told him I would consider him since he was a certified Tree Arborist.  Well the crew showed up and como-cos' me one day when I hadn't approved or scheduled as they were rained out from Bear Creek Golf Course and thought they would just randomly pick up a job.  So I allowed them to trim two trees.  Adam wasn't with them.   Within months a limb had fallen after they trimmed my trees.  I called and Adam said he would come by to look and he never did.  I did get a call from the appointment desk scheduler to inquire about scheduling an estimate.  What?  Nevertheless, today is 4/4/13 and the second tree had a 12' limb fall on my pergola/roof yesterday.  So did they trim my trees?  Yes!  Did I have limbs fall after the tree trimming?  Yes!

Arborists questions, answered by experts

If executed correctly your tree should survive after being transplanted to a new spot. However, effective transplanting requires six months, careful root pruning, safe transport to the new location, and replanting in prime soil conditions. You’ll also need an appropriately sized root ball for a complete tree transplant. A good rule of thumb is that, for every inch in diameter, your tree’s root ball needs to be around 11 inches. So a tree with a diameter of six inches needs a root ball of approximately 66 inches.

If you don’t stake a tree that needs support, it could be at greater risk of being damaged or failing completely, whether it uproots or falls over. That could cause damage to your property or other surrounding trees. If you want to grow healthy trees, you may need to stake them for best results.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

If the roots are still alive, the dead tree will usually try to put out new shoots. That doesn’t mean the tree will survive or that the dead parts of a tree will come back to life. If parts of the tree have died and turned gray or rotten, nothing will bring them back to life and they need to be safely removed.

It depends on the type of tree. Typically, late spring on the cusp of winter is ideal for trees about to emerge from dormancy and produce new buds. That said, late fall is ideal for certain deciduous trees prone to bleeding sap. Avoid trimming trees in early spring, when they’re prone to disease.
