My primary business is consulting on buildings that have construction defects that allow moisture intrusion, rot, mold, etc. I also work with builders on new buildings to assist in the sequencing and selection of products to prevent moisture intrusion, promote long-term building performance, ie., concrete curing, roof flashing, window and door installation, moisture barriers, basement waterproofing, etc.

360 Insulation is a family business located in Monterey, Tn. We specialize in retro fitting existing homes and bringing them up to current insulation standards. The average home, even those 5-10 years old, isn't up to current energy standards. Our slogan is "Quality work at a fair price" and that's what we do on a daily basis. We never sub-contract any of our work, you will always see myself, my brother and/or my son. We also offer gutter cleaning service, pressure washing and general handyman services. We've found and fixed many leaks and burst pipes a homeowner didn't even know they had while we were inspecting crawl spaces.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes, cold walls could indicate that your home has poor insulation, especially if the walls are significantly colder than the air or other areas in the home. In most cases, cold walls are a sign that the heat produced by your furnace isn’t hanging around long enough to make the walls warm. If that’s the case, hire a local HVAC technician to take a closer look at your heating system.

Costs depend on insulation material, labor, accessibility, and whether existing insulation requires removal.

You should not put fiberglass insulation in basements, since fiberglass is known to trap mold and mold is more commonly grown and produced in basements. You should also avoid placing insulation near water heaters, oil burners, or other hot appliances. For more information about the best and worst places to install insulation, consider hiring an insulation professional.

Spreading tin foil over your windows works similarly to radiant barrier insulation, but not as well. It will reflect some of the sunlight that would otherwise come through the glass and warm up the inside of your home, so it might help a little to keep your home cool in the summer. However, the appearance isn’t preferable to blinds or drapes that can offer the same benefits. You might also consider tinting your windows instead, which is a more aesthetically pleasing change that can still block a good portion of the solar heat coming through your windows.

Vapor barriers in attics are a bit outdated and most areas no longer recommend them for attic spaces. For vented attics, the best method is usually to install drywall and cover it with latex paint before attaching insulation fiberglass, cellulose, or foam insulation. When renovating an attic to use as a living space, a contractor can guide you on the best way to cover insulation.
