"John and his team did a great job finishing a concrete floor in my basement. The new floor looks great and both inside and outside the house show no signs of any construction work being performed. I will use his company again on future projects."

"I made the appointment with Mr. Blewett several weeks in advance. On the (Monday) morning scheduled, he arrived on time and took care of winterizing the system. I plan to continue to use Blewett Lawn & Landscaping to maintain our system."

"The team was great. David did the inspection. Nick & Jose repaired the masonry chimney and installed a wood burning stove. Everyone was professional and courteous. We are happy to have a functional and stylish wood stove."

"Aaron and his crew did amazing tree work and delivered on their start date. this was despite snags that other contractors could have pushed the date further. He is the equipment and team to make quick and quality work. I will likely hire him again to expand and level my driveway through a hill. He also has served our country as a Green Beret which is pretty bad ass to meet such a caliber of person."

Small jobs welcome

"I had a serious issue with the brick on my home and I could not get anyone to return my calls. Wielman reached out to my request immediately, was out the following week to give me an estimate and showed up a week later to complete the work. He was thorough in his explanations about the problem and how to fix it. His crew was great and they did a great job cleaning up. He even managed to find a few of my discontinued brick. The final product looks great. You cannot tell that brick was removed and replaced. Iâ m very happy with the job and highly recommend him."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

No, you don’t need to soak the brick before cutting it by hand. In fact, cutting a wet brick can make it harder to see your score lines and may cause the chisel to slip. Soaking is sometimes used with power tools to reduce dust, but for hand-cutting, it’s best to work with dry bricks for better control and visibility.

You may not need a hammer drill if you’re planning on drilling one or two very small diameter holes in brick. For holes with a diameter of 3/16-inch or less, a regular drill with a masonry bit can do the job. However, the bit will heat up quickly, and the process will take significantly longer than with a hammer drill. Prepare to cool your drill bit down in a bucket of water more often.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Unfortunately, there are many disadvantages to stone houses. They are slow to build and the materials are pricey, both of which balloon the total cost. Stone walls require a more robust foundation, which costs more to install. Running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC through a stone house is much more difficult too, so homeowners need to seriously consider if the aesthetic benefit is worth the cost of building with stone. One of the questions to ask a masonry contractor is if a similar aesthetic can be achieved with another material.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.
