"Aaron and his crew did amazing tree work and delivered on their start date. this was despite snags that other contractors could have pushed the date further. He is the equipment and team to make quick and quality work. I will likely hire him again to expand and level my driveway through a hill. He also has served our country as a Green Beret which is pretty bad ass to meet such a caliber of person."

"Very professional company AFS. They came out and leveled a concrete floor that had been poured over foundery sand and was not properly compacted so floor began to settle. They drilled the holes all around the walls and across the floor at specific locations and slowly brought leveled the floor with expanding foam. Concrete piers were positioned in place so the foundation could never move and cause cracks. Very proud of the job they did and it has been a money making rental unit for me. Thanks AFS for job well done. Bill McCallie Chattanooga Tennessee"

Small jobs welcome

"I couldn’t be happier with the deck they built for my porch! From start to finish, the entire process was professional, smooth, and stress-free. They paid close attention to every detail, used quality materials, and made sure everything was done right. The craftsmanship is outstanding, and the finished deck turned out even better than I imagined. The crew was friendly, hardworking, and respectful of my property, always cleaning up at the end of the day. It’s clear they take pride in their work and genuinely care about customer satisfaction. If you’re looking for a company that is reliable, honest, and delivers exceptional results, I highly recommend them. I will definitely be using them again for future projects and won’t hesitate to recommend them to family and friends. Thank you for transforming my porch into a beautiful space that my family will enjoy for years to come!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Cutting stone comes with a number of safety hazards. First and foremost, if you’re not comfortable with the equipment required to cut stone, including blades and grinders, you could easily injure yourself. The heavy machinery also poses a risk to your ears if you don’t wear proper ear protection; similarly, you need to wear eye protection to keep debris from irritating your eyes.

However, the biggest risk from cutting stone comes from the stone dust. When breathed in, stone dust can be a huge hazard to your lungs. Always wear a face mask when cutting stone to prevent inhaling stone dust, and thoroughly clean the work area when you are finished.

To avoid injury, we recommend hiring a stone-cutting professional, rather than attempting this job yourself.

Spalling brick is not uncommon, but it does indicate a serious issue. It can be caused by water damage, an intense freeze-thaw cycle, or something else. Painted bricks can be susceptible to spalling, as the paint doesn’t allow the porous material of the brick to breathe, which can trap moisture. Spalling should always be addressed immediately before more serious structural damage occurs.

If you’re attempting to mix and pour your own mortar, expect to pay between $5 to $10 for an 80-pound bag of mix. The cost to repair mortar, however, can range from $300 to $500 for a 20-square-foot wall. The larger the area and the more extensive the repair, the higher the cost.

You can purchase from many brick manufacturers and distributors via their websites, where you can also get estimates based on the quantity you need. You’ll find bricks at your local home improvement stores as well, though they won’t have as much of a variety to choose from. As for antique bricks, secondary selling websites like eBay can be a great resource.

When painting brick, each application method has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Spraying is significantly faster but may not penetrate deeply beyond the surface layer. Rolling is effective for working paint into the brick's texture but can be less effective on mortar joints. If you opt for a roller, choose a thick nap of at least a half-inch to ensure paint gets into all the crevices for even coverage. Using a brush is generally not recommended as it is very time-consuming and provides poor surface penetration. Ultimately, a combination of spraying followed by back-rolling is often the best strategy for a durable and even finish.
