Customers say: True professional

"When we called Smoky Top Contractors we were treated with respect with an ambitious and "we will do it all" attitude. When we met with with them in person we knew that they were the company that we wanted to do our major landscape, hardscape, and driveway pavers... and their bid for the job solidified our decision. From the landscape architect, the renderings, the blueprints, the immediate communication all the way to that last minute of work was a positive experience for such an extensive project. Mike and his sons and other workers worked hard from the moment they arrived until they left and their final product was second to none. We have another major project to do in the near future, and we undoubtedly know that Smoky Top Contractors will be our only phone call."

"Quality Lawn Care, Larry Kennedy puts the customer first. He did a great job installing a French drain with a loose rock overlay, then finished up the area with sod. I will hire Larry again for future, professional landscape work."

"Juan was absolutely amazing. He made contact with me on Sunday to set up a time to come out to my property to look over the project and give me a quote. He arrived promptly at the agreed upon time on Monday, looked over everything, and gave me a more than reasonable price for the size of my lawn even taking into consideration how bad the yard had gotten thanks to illness and the recent storms. He started work right away and was complete in less than three hours. I wish I had known of him three years ago when I first moved out here, as I would have been enlisting his services from day one. I will make sure my landlord has his contact info after I move, so as to recommend him to any future tenants. Anyone looking for lawn service should definitely reach out to him!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

There are several reasons your grass may be dying that could be in or out of your control. The most common issues include poor drainage, under/overwatering, poor soil pH, low soil nutrients, low sunlight, or too much foot traffic.

It depends. Smaller, younger trees take longer to mature, but they're more resilient, their roots don't get as damaged during transplanting, and they recover faster. Plus, they're much more affordable to plant, and it's possible to DIY the planting.

On the other hand, mature trees produce fruit faster and provide more shade and privacy immediately. Ideally, a small or medium tree is the better choice if you can wait a few years for it to mature. But if you need immediate maturity, a larger tree is the only option.

The primary disadvantages of xeriscaping are the high upfront cost and the significant labor required to establish it. A xeriscaping project can cost between $3,000 and $24,000 on average. Additionally, the resulting landscape will have less of a traditional green appearance, which may not appeal to everyone's personal taste and could potentially narrow your pool of buyers if you decide to sell your home. However, despite these initial drawbacks, the long-term benefits include saving water, time, and money on lawn maintenance.

The truth is, there really is no such thing as a 100% deer-proof plant. Deer will decimate even the prickliest flora if they’re hungry enough. However, there are plenty of beautiful plants that deer don’t necessarily enjoy. These include thistles, wisteria vines, sword ferns, and beautyberries.

Deer are herbivores, and they love vegetable gardens as much as Peter Rabbit. If you don’t want to fence in your entire property, consider creating an attractive raised-bed veggie garden with mesh fencing around it to keep out deer and other critters.
