He purchased needed materials at a reasonable cost, set date and time to do the work, and was on the job at the set time. The work was completed that day to my satisfaction. The site was cleaned up, all tools, etc packed up and no trash left around my home. Grout looks matched, and neat and hard to close doors now close easily. Yes, to some extent, you can speed up the time it takes plaster to dry and cure. Choose a time of year when humidity levels are somewhere in the middle, neither too high nor too low, to allow moisture to evaporate from the plaster effectively. Also, open a window or set up a fan in the room to improve ventilation.

Don't use a dehumidifier in an attempt to speed up drying time, as a dehumidifier may suck moisture from the air too quickly, leading to crumbly plaster.

Small hairline cracks in plaster walls are not serious and are mostly cosmetic, but larger or widespread cracks indicate structural problems that need repair. 

  • Cracks 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) or thinner: Cosmetic cracks you can repair if desired.

  • Cracks wider than 0.5 centimeters or widespread cracks: Structural repair is needed, either DIY or by a pro.

  • Cracks 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) or wider: Contact a plaster repair professional.

Watch for large, deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, and cracks along the walls where they meet the ceiling. Repair these cracks to prevent further damage.

Although their applications are very similar, no drywall compound and spackle are not the same thing. Spackle is a bit thicker and is used to patch holes as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. Joint compound shrinks a bit more and can be more temperamental to spread. However, one benefit is that you can use joint compound as spackle (for small jobs), but you can’t use spackle as joint compound.  

If the holes in the plaster are small, you can fill them with layers of patching plaster until they’re filled. After it dries, you can sand the plaster and paint over it. If the hole is much larger, consider using bonding plaster first and then a layer of patching plaster, completing the process with sanding and a layer of paint.
