"They rekeyed at lock at my house in the basement. I do not use this door very much because the stairs are too steep. When I went to open the door the lock just spinned around. Since it had been two months I would have to pay $80 plus Mike save for them to fix what they didn’t fix to be gone with. Also when I pulled up to the van and met the repairman he had been smoking marijuana. I’m retired law enforcement."

"Steve's son made two copies of a deadbolt key. I took the keys home to find out they didn't even fit into the lock. I took the lock off the door and took the lock/keys to "Rick's lock and key" this time, who laughed and told me A-1 used the wrong blanks. Rick's advised to me to return to A-1 for a refund/correction of mistake. Rick's said they get A-1 screw-ups alot. Seemed like honest mistake though. I returned to A-1, explained everything, and showed them the the key copies with the store name "A-1 security" stamped on them and expected a quick resolution. I was shocked when Steve, the owner, and his son wouldn't admit the mistake, refused me a refund and refused to make the right keys. Instead, the owner called me a "moron" and physically threatened me. He said "get out of here before I kick your a__". I was incredulous. I was also physically scared, as Steve and his son are both 6'3" and imposing. Maybe this was a one-off and I caught him on a bad day. I don't know. Obviously, i give low marks for professionalism. I will take Rick's lock and key's advice and never return to that business again. If you are reading this, I suggest you do the same."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

One of the best tools for removing a stripped bolt is a handy pair of locking pliers. Locking pliers can usually grip onto screws with a broken, rounded, or stripped head and lock in place so that you can loosen even the most stubborn bolt that would otherwise remain hopelessly jammed.

Yes, you should change the locks as soon as you can after completing the purchase of a house. This is a matter of privacy and security, as you have no idea how many copies of the keys the previous owner made. You can change the locks yourself or hire a pro to replace or rekey the lock, which costs $50 to $100.

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key:

  • They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

  • They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

  • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key.

Rekeying a lock is less expensive than replacing the whole unit. The cost to rekey is about $50 to $100 when you hire a pro or as little as $10 if you DIY. The cost to change a lock is $130 to $500, depending on the hardware you select.

Replacing your locks isn’t always a necessary option. You can usually save money by rekeying locks instead of replacing the hardware. You should consider rekeying the locks instead of replacing them in the following scenarios:

  • You want to upgrade your existing locks.

  • You have a lock you don’t want to replace.

  • You recently bought a home and want to change the locks.

  • You lost your key.
