"I have been extremely satisfied with this company. The supervisor is outstanding. He is honest, prompt and a good communicator. In 2017 they did some major repair work by replacing replacing wood in the eaves and paneling on the second floor of my house which is wood outside and was built in the early 1970s. They also painted the entire outside of the house. Since then I have used them for home improvements such as bathroom remodeling, replacing a window and wood frame, putting in a drain in the back yard and work in the kitchen replacing stove hood. The work is first class, the crew is courteous and efficient. They do a lot of different types of work on a house and I am very fortunate to have found them and would highly recommend them to you."

"I had a fantastic experience working with Tyson and the team at Westward Renovations from start to finish. I came to them with a tricky jack-and-jill bathroom setup that I wanted transformed into two separate en-suite bathrooms. The 3D design modeling they provided was incredibly helpful in visualizing the final layout and making decisions with confidence. The project involved a full down-to-the-studs remodel and required multiple permits from the city, but Tyson handled everything seamlessly. He navigated the inevitable challenges of a renovation with professionalism and ease. The end result? Two beautiful, high-end bathrooms that exceeded my expectations. They also did multiple small jobs around the house that I am very happy with. I highly recommend Tyson and Westward Renovations—and I wouldn’t hesitate to work with them again!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

Common mistakes when finishing basement walls include neglecting proper insulation, insufficient moisture management, and poor ventilation. Not addressing these issues can lead to mold growth, water damage, and discomfort. Additionally, inadequate planning, improper framing, and rushing the project can result in subpar outcomes.

It's essential to follow best practices, seek professional guidance if needed, and prioritize thoroughness and attention to detail.

In addition to overseeing new home builds, construction managers work on large renovations and major remodels. For example, they may work with designers and oversee the construction of a finished basement, kitchen renovation, or a home addition. They may also oversee large-scale remodels, such as the update of a historic home. Construction managers step into small projects for more specific assistance, such as building budgets and compiling the team.

A walkout basement is considered to be partially below grade because at least one wall is entirely exposed. In some cases and in specific municipalities, inspectors and appraisers will still count walkout basements as below grade, which means the space can’t serve as living space or be rented out. If you intend on using the area as living space or a separate apartment, you should check with your local building department to make sure it’s legal to do so.

If you’re not sure which method of raising the ceiling is best for you, here are a couple of considerations to help you make that decision. A professional ceiling company will be able to help you determine the best option for your home.

  • How long you are planning to live there: although raising the basement ceiling will increase the value of your home, if you’re planning to sell the house, then go for raising the house.

  • The condition of the foundation: to lower the floors, your foundation has to be intact whereas raising the house will allow you to restore the damaged foundation.
