"Mr. O’Grady gave me a quote that actually reflected the final cost and was able to perform the work at a convenient time for me. The completed work looks good and functions properly and the work area was left clean and tidy after completion of the work. "Your Home Solar designed an incredible system to bring power to the buildings on my off-grid property. They helped me understand the process, evaluate various options and gave me great advice. They have been incredibly professional. My system has been working well for over a year without any glitches. They also have an annual maintenance plan that is reasonably priced."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, wires are still hot, even if the light switch is off. The only way to ensure the wire is no longer live and that you can work with it safely is to open your circuit breaker, locate the breaker for the outlet you’re working with, and turn off the breaker for that outlet.

No. Do not use a 14-gauge wire on a 20-amp outlet. A certified licensed electrician would know that the National Electrical Code (as per Section 240.4(D) subsection 3) requires 14-gauge wires to be used with a maximum amplitude of 15. Therefore, you should only use 12-gauge wires on 20-amp outlets.

While circuit breakers are designed to be reset after tripping, there isn't a strict countdown to when they will fail. The primary danger lies in a breaker tripping multiple times in a short period without allowing the components to cool down. Theoretically, a standard breaker might handle around 50 trips caused by simple overloading. However, this number can be much lower in practice. For instance, a high-current fault could damage a breaker to the point that it needs replacement after only two resets. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that trips frequently exacerbates the underlying problem by causing the electrical components, wires, and the breaker itself to overheat. This can lead to permanent damage, cause the breaker to trip unnecessarily in the future, and increase the risk of an electrical fire. If a breaker trips every few minutes, you should leave it in the 'off' position and call a qualified electrician for an inspection.

The color of your cable will help you to identify its function. In the U.S., the National Electrical Code (NEC) designates the color code for electrical cables. “Hot” cables are black, red, and blue. In cases of higher voltage lines, orange might also be used to indicate a hot cable. White or gray indicates a neutral, and green or green with a yellow stripe indicates a ground.

No, it doesn’t matter which of the two wires goes on each of the two switch terminals. Just be sure to put the ground wire in the correct terminal. The ground wire is either green, bare copper, or green with a yellow stripe. The other wires are hot wires and are typically black. They can be used interchangeably.
