"Bill Box (and his wife) of American Building Science inspected a home for me in Madisonville, KY in June 2026. He came highly recommended, and his company name fits, his inspection was incredibly thorough and grounded in clear, detailed analysis. The final digital report included photos, clear descriptions, and color‑coding to show the severity of each issue, and it was easy for my agent to use when requesting repairs. Bill was kind, professional, and patient with every question. He also gave us a brief walkthrough of his inspection, pointing out items that needed attention now or in the near future. One thing I appreciated most was his honesty, he’s straightforward about the condition of the home and will tell you if the repairs may be extensive enough to reconsider the purchase. If you want a meticulous, trustworthy inspector who provides a detailed, user‑friendly report for you and your agent, I highly recommend Bill Box of American Building Science."

"Rep. checked entire system. He found several wires not connected properly and fixed this. He also made recommendations regarding the attachment of the panels to the rood that would provide more stability and leakproofing. The representative appeared to know what he was doing - much better than others, including the representative who was engaged by the roofer (who replaced our rood due to hail damage) to disconnect/connect the panels."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

While many states require all new construction to undergo blower door tests, it’s not a requirement for existing homes. But in both cases, a blower test helps confirm that the contractor has sealed the exterior, that the type of ductwork installed is functioning properly, and that your home is as efficient as possible.

There are a couple of ways you can save on the cost of your home energy audit. First, find out if you qualify for programs like the Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program for low-income households. Next, check with your local utility company to find out if you qualify for any local rebate programs to offset the cost of this helpful service.

Blower door tests are measured in a few different ways, but the most popular are air changes per hour (ACH) and cubic feet of air (CFM) moving through the house per hour. A good ACH score is less than 2ACH, but 1ACH is better. This means the house experiences a total air change within 60 minutes (for 1ACH). For 2ACH, there’s a complete change every 30 minutes, and so on. CFM scores are similar in that a lower score means less air change, and therefore less leakage.

Home power is measured in kilowatt-hours, commonly expressed as kWh. The average home uses between 800 and 1,000 kWh per month. Peak usage (and highest bills) occurs in the middle of summer and the depths of winter. Keeping on top of your usage during these crucial months will lower your annual average usage considerably.

You can increase your home’s load factor by replacing fuse boxes with a circuit breaker, hiring a licensed electrician to upgrade your electrical panel, upgrading wiring, or installing subpanels. An electrical inspection by an expert can help determine the state of your current electrical systems and how they can be improved.
