Chalk paint can be applied without sanding first. Keep in mind that while there are a lot of chalk paint color options available, there aren’t as many choices as latex or oil-based paint.

You can also learn how to paint furniture without sanding using a liquid deglosser, sometimes referred to as liquid sandpaper. This can remove any old paint, gloss, or varnish, without the need to manually sand. Apply the deglosser using a cloth, then wait for the chemical to penetrate through the surface. Yes, paint does go bad. How long a can of paint will last once opened depends on the type of paint and the storage conditions. If you take care to store it properly—sealed up airtight in a cool, dry spot away from the sun—your paint can last for several more years. 

Streaky trim paint can result from several factors, including improper application techniques and insufficient coats. If you use a brush too large or damaged, you’re more likely to get uneven coverage. Using the wrong paint for the surface can also mean it’s not opaque enough to get the right coverage and a smooth finish. Remember to keep drying times in mind if you’re doing multiple coats. Make sure the bottom layer is completely dry before adding another layer. Otherwise, the brush and drag and clump the different paint textures, leading to a streaky, bumpy mess.

In some cases, expensive, premium paint brands are better than their budget paint brand competitors, but that isn’t always the case. BEHR® and PPG Paint® companies are moderately priced and still offer great coverage and durability. What’s more, each paint brand offers a variety of paint lines—each with its own pros and cons.

The largest paint company in the world is Sherwin-Williams®, followed by PPG Paints®. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the only brand worth considering.
