Some suggest mothballs as a deterrent for iguanas, but they are ineffective and harmful. Mothballs contain chemicals like naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene, which are toxic to humans and animals, including iguanas. The fumes can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and other health issues. Moreover, using mothballs outdoors is not recommended, as they contaminate soil and water sources.
You can easily find sprays that claim they are safe for pets and kids. However, we’d rather not use them in our own homes if we’re worried about pet safety: They still include pesticides and other chemicals, and are best avoided in any food prep areas like the kitchen, or any spots where children and pets may place. That’s why sprays didn’t end up in our suggestions for the safest options.
Many scents are claimed to be roach deterrents and in some cases roaches will try to avoid them. That includes peppermint, eucalyptus, and citronella. But these scents aren’t much use for driving cockroaches away entirely -- roaches can live in horrible conditions and a few smells they don’t like won’t make them give up. Also, sprays made using these scents be irritating to your pet’s delicate nose. Instead, it’s best to turn to the remedies we listed above.
