"I used HomeAdvisor to find a landscape gardener after previously using two local landscape companies that proved to be very disappointing, with their level of service and the work they did. Harrison Childers, the owner of Level Cut Lawn & Landscapes LLC. called me regarding my inquiry. I had arranged to have them come out and quote me for the job I needed carrying out, along with another company who did not even bother to turn up for their appointment. I found Harrison to be very professional from the onset, he called ahead of time the morning of his appointment to confirm what time he would be with me, and again to say he was running a little late and how far away he was. When he arrived we discussed the project, which was to remove all the pine needles around our property, adding a layer of top soil and then add black mulch. I then received a quote via my email the very next day. The builders did a terrible job of at the back of my garden where conifers where planted. They left a ton of lumpy clay heaped up in piles around the trees, and the ground around them was very uneven. Harrison removed all the old pine needles, leveled it all out and broke up all the clay. They then laid new top soil, and mulch. I also wanted some flower beds widening and all the edges around the garden tidying up. We had some area's that also needed to be repaired with new sod, which Harrison did a lovely job of repairing. The job was completed without being rushed and I was more than satisfied with the work carried out, and how reasonable the price was. Both my husband and I decided to give Harrison the work due to his impeccable manners, and because we could tell from speaking with him how passionate he was about his work. I am a little OCD and that didn't faze him one bit. He worked very hard to make my garden look picture perfect. I am now looking forward to planting up my boarders, which now look amazing, with beautiful deep clean, straight edges. We will definitely be using Level Cut Lawn & Landscapes in the future for all our garden maintenance, throughout the coming year. I would not hesitate to recommend Level Cut Lawn & Landscapes to anyone who is looking for a landscape gardener who takes pride in his work, and his company's good reputation."

Customers say: True professional

"We have hired George Daniels and his son at New Beginings Landscaping to do a lot of work for us over the past 15 years. They do outstanding work, are always on time and always go above and beyond to provide outstanding customer service. They recently planted 4 10 foot Nellie Stevens Hollies, 2 Camellias, a number of encore azaleas as well as a number of foundation plantings around our new patio. They also remulched our backyard natural areas. I would not hire anyone else for landscaping work. They are a pleasure to work with and never disappoint.

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can excavate in the winter, but it might make the job harder. Frozen ground is harder to dig, and snow or ice can make the work site more hazardous. A contractor may need special equipment and techniques, such as ground-thawing methods, to break through frozen soil. Although winter excavation is possible, it may take longer and be more costly than excavating during warmer months.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

You can bury underground electrical wire six inches deep—but only if you use a rigid metal electrical conduit. For rigid, non-metallic conduits, bury the wire at least 12 inches deep. If using an underground feeder cable rated for direct burial, you'll need to place it at least 18 inches deep, as it has no conduit for extra protection.

Yes, you can install a trench drain if you already have concrete in your yard or garden. While it can complicate some aspects of the job and slightly run up the cost, it is doable. Residential trench drains can be easily retrofitted to outdoor areas with concrete without having to remove excessive amounts of your patio, pool area, or decorative walkways.

To locate an underground downspout, you should start by identifying where the above ground gutter drains. Look for an entry point, such as a pipe or elbow leading into the ground. Follow the surface path for signs like depressions, landscaping disruptions, or wet areas after rain. You can use a metal detector or plumber’s snake to trace the pipe underground. For deeper pipes, a professional locator tool or camera inspection may be necessary. Visual markers or utility maps can also guide the search.
