"Scott and his team were complete, experienced professionals. We moved into our house last year and unfortunately the St. Augustine grass we had developed a fungus. He was able to come in and very quickly identify the problem, provide us education about our grass and other types, and quote us for our project. His rate was very fair for the work, given the size of the project. The team were fast, cleaned up the area and came back several times to ensure perfection. They even replaced several sprinkler heads that had been damaged by previously landscaping. We can't thank Scott and team enough. We will use them for future projects. For Scott, his projects are more than getting the job done. I can tell he will revisit and check in from time to time. I know this because he does it with some of our neighbors who he's worked with. This is above and beyond customer service. Thank you for all you did to help us!"

"Not one asphalt companies ever contacted me and just one company came out to measure and forgot about me thereafter. But as to KE sealcoating, they came out when they said they would and have me a start date and did above what I had expected. Their price was exactly on budget. I was immensely impressed with their professionalism. I would recommend them to anyone. Top notch company. I’ve now had 2 projects from angys list that proved to be invaluable."

"Javier Ramos Landscaping LLC did a fantastic job installing the new sprinkler system. The newly laid sod was peeled back and the trenches were all hand dug. Javier put the system under the driveway without the need to cut it. It took Javier and his crew 1 day to complete the sprinkler system. The lawn was back to normal and no sign of the trenching exists. I would highly recommend Javier Ramos Landscaping LLC."

"I hired Live Oak Services to put in an irrigation system. I had 3 quotes drawn up, not only did Tonya come back with the lowest price, one by half, the Live Oak team was the most knowledgeable and answered all my questions. Very pleased with the quality of the job and ongoing customer service. I highly recommend Live Oak Services and will use again."

"The service was excellent from the first meeting, estimate, explaining the process, to completion. I loved the professionalism of this company so much that I am getting an estimate for hard wood floors. This company is worth every dime and then some. I highly recommend their services and I am very particular about my home and how the company first presents themselves... The first presentation relaxed me. I felt like I was not being ripped off. The owner is knowledgeable about his craft, took his time, and talked to me about what to expect from his company. Thanks guys I look forward to working with you again."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

The most common causes of sunken pavers are poor base preparation and insufficient compaction. The problem could also be how your pavers were installed. If the soil beneath your patio or walkway wasn't compacted, it will pull pavers down as it settles. Additionally, using bare soil instead of making a paver bed with compacted gravel and sand can cause sinking over time. To fix sunken pavers, consider recompacting the base and addressing any drainage or erosion issues in the area.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

There’s no single best asphalt grade—it all comes down to where and how it’s used. Highways and heavy-traffic roads need something tough, like polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) or Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Local roads and parking lots rely on the Performance Graded (PG) system, chosen based on climate. A PG 64-28 mix, for example, handles a broad temperature range while simpler, more cost-effective mixes are typically enough for residential driveways. The best grade of asphalt depends on traffic, weather, and your budget, which is why a professional’s input is always a smart move before making a decision.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.
