"These guys did a great job! I was called within 1 minute of requesting quotes for this job. I was given a reasonable quote promptly. Within a few days the unit was installed and is working wonderfully. I have to point out the technician that did the install. Josh was courteous and professional at all times. He stayed in contact with me thru the whole process. I would absolutely recommend this company and will to any of my neighbors that have such needs."

"Vitality arrived within an hour of contacting Firefly electric for an estimate to install an extra outlet in my home. We had 2 other estimates and Vitaliy was by far the most reasonably priced. He was able to install it on the spot and did a great job. I would highly recommend Firefly electric and will be using them for all my future electrical needs."

"Can highly recommend this company. Service and installation was great. Very professional and friendly. Generators are in short supply, so plan early. Allow about three to four months for generator to be available."

"Serge and Reuben were very kind and professional. They showed up on time, managed the permits and inspections in record time. AND got the power company in my area on board in record time also! This in the middle of storm damage all over our town! When there were some issues with wiring (as there always is in a house built initially in 1940 and added to in no apparent plan, quirky but cool!) Serge explained them to me and we came up with a plan and though he could have, didn't charge me for the extra effort. We discussed some future projects as the remodel goes forward and he ran wires for them so it will be a go when we get there. I couldn't have asked for better service, better communication, better replacement equipment and better understanding when I wanted to change things on the fly. He will be my go to guy for all future projects and I would recommend him highly and plan to with everyone I know. He does commercial and residential and is truly a part of the pro family now"

"We wanted to update our dated kitchen, and needed to upgrade multiple aspects of the electrical. We called Current Electric on recommendation from a friend who had used their services in the past. Through the entire process of replacing the old lighting with more modern fixtures, installing an outlet in the pantry for our toaster oven to free up counter space, and adding a switch under the sink for the new garbage disposal we had plumbers install beforehand, these contractors were friendly, professional and knowledgable. They worked in a timely manner that allowed us to stress less about the project and enjoy the new look and function of our updated kitchen. Everything works just how we had hoped and we intend to use their services for any future electrical work."

"Key is very polite and professional. He was able to handle my issue quickly. Key noticed a faulty wire (not what he was here for), which is not the first time that’s happened in this house. He fixed it when he could have just left it. I appreciate his attention to detail. If it was possible to give him more than 5 stars, I would."

Small jobs welcome

"My initial inquiry was quickly responded to by the business owner. We discussed the problem, and he provided good advice. Based on that I hired him and scheduled the visit. Everything went smoothly and the work was completed to my satisfaction. I would hire DJ Geter again and refer him to anyone who asks me who my electrician is."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

The cost to install a whole-house generator averages $5,200, with a typical price range of $1,500 to $8,900. However, total costs can vary from $400 for a small portable unit to over $18,000 for a large-capacity system. The most significant cost factor is the generator's size and capacity, but other variables include the brand, fuel type, and labor for assembly and installation.

Generator costs can be broken down by type:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500 to $2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000 to $6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000 to $18,000

To avoid paying for more power than you need, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load for your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes to find the best deal for your specific needs and budget.

The amount of time a standby generator can run continuously is around 3,000 hours on average. However, standby generators can generally run indefinitely as long as they have a continuous fuel supply. Generators hooked up to a home’s natural gas supply are the best option for extended usage, as these won’t rely on a finite fuel supply based on how much you have in storage. Generators running on liquid propane or diesel won’t last as long, as these require fuel storage and regular refueling to stay running.

Yes, natural gas generators can work without electricity. Natural gas generators are a common type of backup or whole-house generator that operates when the electrical grid isn’t working. The trick is using a transfer switch (which usually needs to be installed with the generator) that safely switches the home electrical system from the power grid to generator power when needed.

With proper maintenance, a whole-house generator can last between 20 and 40 years. The specific lifespan depends on how often and for how long the generator is used, and some models may have their life expectancy rated in hours of operation. To maximize its lifespan, expect to spend around $150 to $300 per year for annual maintenance checks from a qualified technician. During these checks, a technician will inspect the engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels. Consulting your installer and choosing a low-impact fuel like natural gas or diesel can also help ensure your generator lasts as long as possible.

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.
