Wood stain is usually dry to the touch within 6 to 8 hours, but you should let each coat sit for 24 hours before applying another coat or applying a protective coat over it. If you applied your stain in high humidity or cold temperatures, you may need to wait up to 48 hours for the stain to dry completely.
If you want the longest-lasting exterior paint, go with acrylic. You can choose from acrylic latex, enamel, or latex enamel. These types of paint can withstand harsh weather conditions and sun exposure. Additionally, matte and satin finishes are likely to be your best bet for exterior paint that can withstand moisture and cracking.
Late spring or early summer is usually the best time to stain a fence. Pick your timing carefully and aim to start your DIY when you see a forecast that shows no rain and low humidity levels for at least a few days.
