"Eddie did not pay many of the subcontractors. Several quit. One threatened a lien on the house. Two contractors showed up after we moved in demanding I pay them. We have had issues with the house that should be covered. Damaged floors due to plumbing issue, etc.. That he admitted he should cover but he's $150k in debt. He was the worst part of our building experience. Very little attention to detail. I was on the site almost everyday. They literally were putting up walls where walls didn't exist in the plans. But they hadn't seen Eddie in days, probably because he didn't pay them and didn't want an argument. After our house, Eddie advertised more and he built three other house in our neighborhood. They have had big problems with him to. There are also several lawsuits against Ed. Do yourself a favor and don't build with this contractor. We made that mistake. There are much better contractors out there."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Prefab kits like a small sunroom for around $20,000 or even a basic gazebo roof for as little as $60 can save you big over professional installation. However, you lose the option for customization, and these structures tend not to last nearly as long. As for bigger projects like a deck or patio, you shouldn’t go with the DIY route unless you’re fully prepped with the tools and know-how to get it done right. Mistakes can be frustrating and costly, so choose a pro if you’re looking to eliminate your risk of error.

Green homes are often more expensive to build, averaging around $200 per square foot compared to the $150 per square foot you’d spend to build a standard home. However, green homes can save you money on your utility bills by consuming less energy or creating energy using solar panels or wind turbines on-site. They’re more expensive to build, but they often end up costing less in the long run.

An ADU is a section of your home that you can feasibly use to house guests or even tenants. Pool houses can be ADUs if they include a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom, but smaller pool houses and pool sheds are more for the homeowner to get more enjoyment out of their pool than for guests.

No, tiny houses don’t have to have wheels. However, if you plan on traveling with your tiny house and want to use it as a transportation method, it’s a good idea to buy a tiny house with wheels or put wheels on one. If you plan to stay put and live full-time in your tiny house, wheels aren’t necessary.

It is almost always more affordable to buy an existing home than to build one from scratch. First of all, new construction mortgage interest rates are often higher than traditional loans. Also, when building a home, you're covering the cost of brand-new finishes, appliances, electrics, plumbing, utility hookups, and labor. Between the cost of labor and permits, building a home will often cost more in the long run.
