"Eddie did not pay many of the subcontractors. Several quit. One threatened a lien on the house. Two contractors showed up after we moved in demanding I pay them. We have had issues with the house that should be covered. Damaged floors due to plumbing issue, etc.. That he admitted he should cover but he's $150k in debt. He was the worst part of our building experience. Very little attention to detail. I was on the site almost everyday. They literally were putting up walls where walls didn't exist in the plans. But they hadn't seen Eddie in days, probably because he didn't pay them and didn't want an argument. After our house, Eddie advertised more and he built three other house in our neighborhood. They have had big problems with him to. There are also several lawsuits against Ed. Do yourself a favor and don't build with this contractor. We made that mistake. There are much better contractors out there."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can finance new construction using a construction loan or a construction-to-permanent loan, or you can use a home equity line of credit or a cash-out refinance if you’re building a second home. Some mortgagors may have restrictions on DIY house builds, so be sure to check that you can get financing before starting your project.

Yes, most general contractors require a down payment for project completion. A reasonable down payment for a contractor is 10% to 25% of the total project cost, though that will vary based on project size and location. The down payment helps cover the upfront costs of materials and permits and helps ensure payment for the project at hand.

Tiny houses, often called tiny homes, need between 100 to 400 square feet, with the most common size being between 200 and 300 square feet. Tiny houses more than 400 square feet venture into apartment-size dwellings and may be considered more of a traditional house than a tiny home. The number of occupants, desired lifestyle, and furniture will all be major factors that determine the desired tiny house size.

It is a good idea to check in with your local city and state regulations before committing to building a shipping container home no matter where you live. This concept is pretty new across the country, and many places won’t let you build one.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers guidelines for home builders on the safe use of ISO intermodal shipping containers repurposed as building components, which can be helpful to review when planning or designing a shipping container home.

While a log cabin is often less expensive to build than a typical home, cabins actually have a similar cost per square foot. The main difference affecting price is that log cabins tend to be much smaller than traditional homes. For instance, many cabins are about 500 square feet, versus a traditional house which averages between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet.
