The length of coax cable can affect the signal. Coax cables and their connectors all have a small amount of electrical resistance, which means that the longer the cable and more connectors in the system, the weaker the signal strength. In most homes, the signal loss is tiny, but systems with coax cable lengths over 100 feet will likely experience signal troubles.
Outdoor TV antennas are often worth it, as the signals broadcast in your area are always stronger outside. If you have an indoor antenna that isn’t performing well, call a TV antenna installation company to come out and use a signal checker to see if a stronger signal is available on your roof, as it often will be. Outdoor antennas require longer cables, which can decrease the quality of the picture, but a professional should be able to find a position where cable length is minimized, and the available signal is strongest for ideal performance.
If you’re having problems with poor reception, here are some simple tips that may help improve the signal and picture quality.
Consider the position of the antenna: Could it be higher, is it secure, or are nearby obstructions interfering with the signal? For a directional antenna, you may need to reposition it in the direction of the broadcast tower.
Move any metallic objects: Metal can interfere or block reception, so if you have stainless steel objects or the antenna is near a wrought-iron fence, this could be a problem. Try to keep the antenna at least six feet away from metal objects..
Cable length: An overly long cable can reduce signal strength. If you don’t need as much cable as you are using, it may be better to exchange it for a shorter one.
Regularly check for obstructions, secure mounting, and clean connections to ensure strong signals.
The shorter the coaxial cable, the better. The further you run the cable, the more signal loss you'll experience. At 50 feet, you'll see significant signal loss, and by 100 feet, you'll experience at least a 30% drop in signal strength.
