"I worked with three local flooring companies to get estimates and measurements for carpeting our basement and stairs. I chose Brooks Flooring for the following reasons: 1. Overwhelmingly, they were the most knowledgeable and most prepared when they came out to measure. One salesperson works with you throughout the entire process, instead of being passed around between different people. 2. Their estimate was $1,000 less than a competitor -- they are very reasonable and don't overcharge for labor. 3. They were able to get the carpet and install within a short timeframe. 4. Best customer service in town -- they showed up on time and made sure that we were satisfied. One of our friends who is a contractor had recommended Brooks Flooring and I highly recommend this company!"

"I met with the salesman who introduced me to a new product for my day room. It was scheduled to be installed the same day as the house carpet. I got a call 3pm the day before install that they couldn't install my day room carpet. It was incorrect type of carpet. I wouldn't have.minded except they had the order for 2 months and then told me the night before."

"He was on time, professional and polite. Cleaned up after/during the job. (5 rooms) Our home is fairly new and the builders did a terrible job with the carpet that caused it to be wavy. But Charlie came to stretch the carpet and it is GREAT!!! I wish I would have found him sooner."

Carpet Installation questions, answered by experts

If the stairs are already covered in carpet, you will need to remove the old carpet and possibly the carpet pad. Any damage to the stairs like cracks, loose boards, or creaky treads may also need to be repaired. You may also want to sand and refinish or paint wood stairs before installing a carpet runner.

When it comes to flooring installers, licensing laws vary from state to state. Even if your state doesn’t require your flooring installer to have a license, your municipality or city might, so it’s a good idea to check with your town before getting started. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines.

Hiring an unlicensed flooring installer could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

Carpets in earthy, neutral shades should go with everything. Specifically, colors like beige, cream, and gray pair well with other neutrals and more vibrant colors. If you’re concerned about your carpet clashing with your walls or furniture, stay away from loud colors and complicated patterns, which could distract from the rest of your decor.

Carpet padding costs an average of $510 to purchase and install in a 225-square-foot room. The price can range from as low as $170 to as much as $850, depending on the brand, the thickness, and the labor cost. Although carpet padding will increase the overall cost of carpet installation, it also helps the carpet hold up longer, reduces noise in the room, and provides more insulation.

When deciding whether to repair or replace your carpet, consider its age, the extent of the damage, and its location. It's often best to replace the entire carpet if the damage is extensive, such as large sections needing replacement, or if it's caused by water, which can lead to mold problems. Similarly, if your carpet is nearing a decade old, replacement is likely the more logical choice. On the other hand, consider repairing your carpet if the damage is localized to one spot, like minor rips or snags, the carpet is still relatively new, or the damage is in a low-traffic area of your home.
