"Jim and Evan completed my home project today, repairing a drop-down ceiling in my finished basement that had been impacted by another home repair project. Not only was Jim extremely prompt in responding to my call, but him and his son, Evan were great to deal with. They were prompt, efficient, and clean. They fixed the ceiling in no time and gave me a great deal on the pricing as well. Highly recommend J&E Ceilings! Thank you, Jim and Evan!"

"I highly recommend Jeff! He did an amazing job assembling several pieces of furniture for me, including a desk, fireplace, and side table, as well as installing my TV with the wires hidden behind the wall for a clean, professional look. He was friendly, reliable, extremely helpful, and his pricing was very fair and reasonable. Everything came out wonderful , and I wouldn’t hesitate to use him again!"

Customers say: True professional

"Matt was great and took his time on a tedious drywall job. He was careful to feather things out and leave seamless transitions back to the wall around the new shower. Appreciated him not rushing and taking time to do things the correct way. Price was also very reasonable."

Wall Repair FAQs, answered by experts

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

They prevent soil erosion, add flat space, and enhance property aesthetics.

Costs depend on material type, labor rates, and additional features like decorative finishes or reinforcement.

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.
