"Job was completed in one day. It was convenient. I woke up with no hot water. Called Hill's (it was on a Friday) around 10am and they had one of their plumbers call me right back so I could explain the problem. He gave me a time that he would be at my home. He called me when he was on the way. He arrived at the time he had said he would (3:30pm). He showed me the problem. Water heater was leaking. (It was 22 years old). It needed to be replaced. I didn't have time or a truck to go purchase one myself. He replaced it and we had hot water by 6pm."

To figure out if your boiler is worth repairing or if you need to replace your boiler, first figure out how old the unit is. Boilers last 15 to 20 years, so if your unit is 15 years old or older, it may be better to replace the entire thing depending on the severity of the problems. If it’s not quite that old, then it’s probably worth repairing. Another thing to consider is whether your warranty covers any of the repair costs. If you go to turn it counterclockwise and it won’t turn anymore, it’s open. Like most other valves, you should be able to turn a radiator valve counterclockwise (to the left) to open it and clockwise (right) to close it. To close a radiator valve, turn it clockwise until you meet some resistance and can’t turn anymore, but do so carefully to avoid breaking the valve.

The radiators closest in proximity to the boiler heating system will heat up first. Radiators in rooms farther away from the boiler will take longer to heat up and may be the coolest rooms in the house. The radiator unit itself should heat up evenly; otherwise, there may be trapped air inside it.

Propane is more cost-efficient than natural gas on a per-unit basis because it produces twice as much heat energy as an equivalent amount of natural gas. But propane is not ideal if you already have a gas line installed. The best choice for your home depends on the efficiency of your appliances and the amount of installation required of your fuel choice.

You can use a boiler and a furnace, although it’s not common to use both for whole-house heating. For example, your furnace may take care of HVAC heating through your vents, while a boiler powers your floor-based radiant heating in the bathrooms. Mixing and matching like this gives homeowners a variety of heating possibilities.
