"Scotty was very prompt in phoning me and was able to come out the next day. He was right on time and very professional. He inspected our shower and recommended we get a bigger fan and purchase a dehumidifier. He told me how to clean the mildew and said since we weren’t showing signs of respiratory problems he didn’t recommend air quality test at this time, but told us how much it would cost ($150.00 less than one phone quote) if we wanted to have it done. We offered to pay him for his time, but he refused stating the inspection is free. Not too many businesses are like this in this day. I would highly recommend HISCO Enviromental to anyone requiring this type of service!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Cathedral ceilings make a statement in your home, but at the cost of your attic space. Normal attics are wide open, which allows warm air to move around and exit your home. Because of this, cathedral ceilings make your home less energy efficient and put your ceiling at risk of venting issues if you’re not careful. They also reduce your attic storage space, potentially cause an echo, and even make it harder to change a light bulb.

Yes, you can put a doorway in a structural wall; in fact, most exterior doors are set into structural walls. The project is a little more challenging than installing a door in a non-load-bearing wall because you need a structural engineer to assess the wall and make sure it’s safe to create a wall opening. Your engineer’s report will include instructions for your contractor on how and where to install additional supports, like steel headers above the door, to distribute the weight above to the wall on either side of the door.

Yes, professionals reinforce the foundation with additional supports or piers to prevent future sinking.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

Most lenders and homeowner’s insurance companies don’t mandate a structural engineer’s inspection, so in most cases, it’s not required. However, it’s a good idea to have one done anyway to ensure you know what you’re buying. You can use the report to carry out repairs after closing or even to negotiate the sale price before closing.
