Septic tanks naturally have bacteria that break down some of the solid waste in the septic tank. However, sludge buildup is just part of owning a septic system. While liquid wastewater can be filtered and treated through the system, a septic tank company has to pump the septic tank out at least every few years.

Whether or not it’s hard to pass a perc test depends a lot on the composition of your soil. When a perc test is conducted where there’s a high concentration of sand in the soil, perc tests almost always pass. However, if your ground is dense clay or rock, it may prove difficult to pass a perc test. A low water table also helps you pass the test, as a high table means your yard isn’t draining water as efficiently.

It only takes a few days for a septic tank to fill with water after a pro has pumped it. This is completely normal, and the water is a vital part of your septic system’s wastewater treatment process. The water that fills your tank days after pumping is not the same as the tank being filled with waste. You shouldn’t have to pump your septic system more than once every three to five years unless you have a tank that’s too small for your home’s water output or there’s a problem with your leach field. 

The best thing to unclog a septic tank is a mechanical auger, especially if the clog is far down the line or particularly dense. You can also clear a clog in a septic line with a wooden pole or steel rod. Be sure to follow safety precautions when working in a septic tank, including wearing heavy-duty work gloves, goggles, and a gas mask.

A septic tank needs to be pumped once every three years on average. However, every septic tank has different needs, and the proper service interval for your system may be every five years, or as frequent as an annual pump-out. Consult with your installer about the proper interval and what to expect regarding the cost of septic tank pumping.
