"Cannot recommend Aspen Fencing enough! They worked with our HOA, pulled the necessary permits with the city, and built the most beautiful wood picket fence. Brien (owner) shared design ideas that we hadn’t thought of and we could not be happier with the finished product! The installers were so nice and polite. Highly recommend Aspen!"

"We were having problems with the shower floor, so asked David to come give us an estimate on fixing it. He noticed the drain had never been sealed when originally put in by the previous contractor about 10 years earlier, so made the estimate to correct all those problems. When they opened up the floor to remove the pan, we found water damage to all support wood running under the shower and under the bathroom floor, so have to pull up the floor, remove the vanity and toilet and replace all the tile. They did this quickly and economically. The workers were all courteous and took measures to keep the carpet clean as they moved thru the house. I have used Affordable Handyman before and will continue to use them for other repairs. They are excellent and communicate well with us."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

If you only use your gate as a pedestrian, walking through without a vehicle, you’re fine to stick with a single fence gate. If your fence opening needs to accommodate vehicles of any kind, from cars to trucks to 4-wheelers, then a double fence gate will suit the space much better and give you more freedom.

Whether you need a permit to build or install a fence depends on several factors, including your location, the fence's height, its placement in your yard, and the materials used. In many cities and highly populated areas, a permit is required, especially for fences taller than 6 feet. Conversely, rural areas may have fewer restrictions. Typically, backyard privacy fences 6 feet or shorter do not require a permit, while front yard fences often have a lower height limit, sometimes as low as 3.5 feet. There can also be exceptions for properties in mixed residential-commercial zones. It's best to check with your local building inspection or zoning department to understand the specific requirements, height restrictions, and location rules for your area. A professional fence installer can help you navigate this process and often secure the necessary permits for you, though this may extend the project timeline.

Yes, like other types of wood fencing, pressure-treated fence boards can warp. However, there are a few things you can do to reduce the likelihood of your fence warping. Sealing or staining your fence every few years, for example, can protect the wood against moisture, sun exposure, and temperature changes.

Fabricating an aluminum fence costs about $4,350 on average, ranging from about $2,450 to $6,500. Your fencing costs can run as low as $750 or as high as $11,000 or more, depending on the fence's size, complexity, and geographic location. You should consider additional cost factors including the thickness of the aluminum, height of the fence, necessary permits, and custom colors.

Ideally, when you replace a fence post, you should also replace the concrete footing. The concrete bonds to your new post, creating a secure base. If you install a new post into old concrete, it won’t be as sturdy.

That said, it is possible. Sometimes the post will lift right out of the concrete. If not, you can use a high-lift car jack to try and lift the pole out of the footing. Put the new post into the same hole and backfill it with fast-setting concrete. Keep in mind, this won’t work well for metal posts.
