At that point it hadn't snowed too much. She was very professional and thorough. I showed her the basement, the grill outside, and all of the rooms inside including the finished attic storage. The destination house is in the city, so it's tight getting to, and parking at. I asked her to go visit the destination to make sure that there would be no problems with the truck. I received the estimate, which seemed fair, higher than some, lower than others. With the estimate, the estimator indicated that the truck would have no problems at the destination. Also, I received instructions to contact the police department to find out if I needed no-parking signs at either locations. I contacted the police and got no-parking signs for the origin location. I didn't get signs for the destination because I assumed the truck could park on the sidewalk and be out of the way of traffic. I did ask for the dimensions of the truck, to be sure.
Then winter began and it snowed a lot. We cleared the sidewalk in front of the destination house every time it snowed. At the origin house we cleared the snow so the truck could park in front of the house. The road was wide enough so traffic could get around the truck in the area we blocked off with the no-parking signs.
The packing team arrived on time on the scheduled day and after a quick tour of the house, got right to work. The team consisted of Kevin, the driver, Steve, and I can't remember the name of the third guy. They worked all day. We bought them lunch. Happy movers are good movers, right? Maybe. During the lunch break we asked Kevin to visit the destination house so that they could make sure the truck wouldn't have any problems. After coming back, they said there wouldn't be any problems. No caveats, nothing else. While packing they pointed out dishes that had been chipped for years. We acknowledged that. They pointed out an apparent split in the legs of a dining room table, those have existed since we got it. There was a little arguing between the workers. They seemed to work in different rooms after that, and that seemed to work. At the end of the day, mostly everything was packed. They left the TV out so we could watch it at night before they packed it up the next day. They left a box for the bedding so we could sleep in the bed. Since we packed on a Friday and moved on a Saturday, if we wanted to pay by credit card, we had to pay on Friday. The packing team used more boxes than the estimate (which was not binding) so we had to pay a little extra for that.
Basically, the same team arrived the next morning, with the addition of a fourth worker later in the day, at the scheduled time, and got right to work packing up the last remaining items and loading the truck. Again, we bought the team lunch. Happy movers are good movers, right? They continued to load the truck for a couple of hours after lunch. Once the truck was full, it was time to move. However, a bike, the grill, and an angled shelf didn't fit into the truck. I told the movers we would move these last items. It's a good thing this wasn't the last day we could get into the house.
We drive to the destination house. No truck. We wait. Eventually we see the truck. They make their way to the turn onto our street. This is where the truck gets stuck for about an hour. Remember when we asked the estimator, and then asked Kevin to make sure that the truck wouldn't have any problems? Remember when they both said there would be no problems? Well, now there is a problem. After an hour, they were able to find the owner of a car, parked legally, on the street to move so they can make the turn. This is the final turn onto our street, not to be confused with our responsibility of having a place to park the truck in front of the house. It's starting to snow. The truck parks in the street. Cars can't get around. I though that the truck would park on the sidewalk, that's not the plan. We'll see how it goes. They set up and get things moving into the house. There is a little complaining. Yes, it's snowing, yes, it's been a long day. I understand. It's still snowing. I'm clearing snow and trying to put salt on the truck ramp so the movers don't slip and get injured. The police arrive. They say we need to stop, or get the truck out of the road so that cars can get by. They were very nice and professional. Reluctantly, Kevin moves the truck onto the sidewalk. I clear the snow that the city missed in order for there to be enough room for cars to get by. The police drove by later to check things out and didn't stop, so we were good. At about 8:00 PM, the truck is empty. We tipped them. Part of me wishes that I had waited. However, part of me realizes that this was a tough day; it was snowing and it was a long day. I appreciate that they did so much work.
Before they leave, we have to pay the extra hours that it took to make the move. I ask about the hour that they were stuck at the corner. Kevin says I have to talk to the office and get that worked out. I understand that. We noted damage to a coffee table and another item.
Time to start unpacking. This is when we find damaged items. The lid of a chest freezer was dented, now the lid doesn't close properly. A bookshelf from Ikea has a hole in the back piece. There is a broken bowl. There was damage to a dresser drawer runner. A desk drawer was broken. Time to start the claims process.
I emailed the moving company to ask about the hour that the truck was stuck. The owner, Chuck, told me that it was my responsibility to ensure that the city streets leading to my new house were wide enough for the truck to navigate. For instance, if I lived on a dirt road, I would be responsible for access issues. If I lived on a dirt road, I would know to ask if the truck was able to drive down the dirt road, or if they needed to get a smaller truck. They said that Kevin told us on the packing day that the truck would be fine as long as a the road was clear at the turn, and no cars were parked. This did not happen. If this had happened, we would have gone and gotten more no-parking signs and made sure that they were up. We're not truck drivers. We made sure the area in front of both houses was adequately clear and usable for a 40 foot by 9 foot truck to park and have cars get by. They have also said that Kevin, at his expense, brought an extra worker on the moving day, and that expense that they didn't charge me for adequately covers the hour that the truck was stuck. Kevin made that decision. I don't think I should be responsible for the hour that the truck couldn't negotiate a turn. I did my due diligence by asking the movers whose profession includes driving a 40x9-foot truck.
Well, the claims process is just about over. If you are reading this I urge you to document the condition of all of your possessions that are to be moved prior to the move so there will be no question if it was damaged in the move. Where I would have purchased paint at the Bargain Outlet, he uses a quality paint. My back bedroom was painted a very dark forest green and the living room was a brick red. As I am selling the house and was advised to paint all the rooms white, I was skeptical 2 coats could do it. What a HUGE difference! Not only did it cover, it made the natural woodwork stand out nicely. My Dining room had an original stencil on the top part of the wall and hadn't been painted since it was done sometime in the 60's/70's. That room too is clean and bright. I was amazed that he taped nothing, but free handed all the trim! I guess that is a bonus of hiring a professional. The ONLY disappoint I ran into was that he hadn't noticed the baseboard heaters and didn't include them in his estimate but I will paint them. John was a pleasure to talk to, he had some ideas on what I needed to do to make the house more appealing to people looking for a new home, such as landscaping etc. He also knew someone he thought would be able to help with the yard work. Wow! He went above and beyond to help me and had some great ideas for me. I will definaiely use him when I find my new place to live! I am from out-of-state so I found them on Angie's List. Their ad on Angie's offered a discount for Angie's List members but when we got there they said they do not offer a discount. They ran computer diagnostics and told me what they thought the problem was. Before I let them continue, since I am not from Charleston, I called my hometown mechanic to confer, and in retrospect I think Arnold's was quite put off by that. I guess they thought I didn't trust them. But I have been taken advantage of by mechanics in the past, as many women can attest to, so I was just trying to make sure by checking with my mechanic who knew my car very well. Anyway, on this first visit, they replaced front brake pads, rotors, serviced calipers, valve cover gasket, t-stat and gasket, radiator cap, lubed the chassis, new antifreeze, replaced from brake rotor and brake pads and did an oil change and replaced the oil filter. This work came to $775. However the engine light remained on so i took the car back on October 10th. This time they replaced the upstream 02/A/F ratio sensor and fixed the inside and outside door handle assembly, which I asked them to do. That came to $742. When after several days I noticed that the vibration remained when driving at high speeds , I made another appointment. I went back on October 21st. First, they were good enough to take a ride in the car with me so they could hear the noise I had been referring to. They even said they put a speaker under the car to record it. And again, I called my mechanic when they said they thought it might be the rear struts. This time they replaced both rear struts, checked hoses, did more trouble shooting and that finally fixed the vibration. The total for that visit was $837. The engine light, however, remained on. In the summer of 2012 I took my car back to Arnold's, again to see why the engine light was still on and to have them check the car before driving to my dear sister-in-law's funeral. I had gotten an oil change at one of those quick lube places because I had a coupon. Arnold's called me and told me that there was a crack in the radiator and how the heck did the quick lube place miss that? Then they told me that I should come get my car and that they never wanted to work on my car again. I was black-listed. In retrospect, I think they were insulted that A) I checked with my mechanic both times before letting them work on my car, and B) that I took the car to the quick lube place rather than have them also do the oil change. I admit that (B) was stupid and insensitive on my part. I can understand now how they would be insulted, although if they had said something, we could have talked it through and I could have told them why I had been wary, being from out-of-state and all. In any case, it really upset me, especially given that I'd shelled out over $2300. One would think that my payment and return business would speak to the confidence I had developed in them. But I guess I really unknowingly hurt their feelings and I guess they felt like I was doubting their well-earned integrity, which I never meant to do and for that I am extremely sorry. In any case, when I returned in August to my northern home, my regular mechanic found the reason for the engine light being on and was able to fix it. Car now runs like a charm, thanks to both Arnold's and my hometown mechanic, G and S Auto Shop!! "I recommend this wonderful company without any hesitation. I first contacted Wood Trades LLC seeking a deck quote in September 2024, and John and Karin came out the very next day. From day one, John and Karin provided impeccable service. I cannot say enough wonderful things about their communication, transparency, honestly, and reliability. All current insurance/contractor licenses were provided up front, and any change in cost was documented through clear contracts. In addition, they patiently navigated me through a difficult permitting process from start to finish. Once the work was started, I had a gorgeous new deck in just over one week. I cannot thank this company enough for gaining, and more importantly, maintaining my trust through this project. I certainly look forward to working with Wood Trades again, and highly recommend their services to anyone seeking high quality results from a wonderful company. Exceeded expectations!"

Rick grew up in a family of hard working contractors, and has been learning the skills of the trade since a very young age. He brings to the table a high level of expertise that is often hard to come by, and will always take the time to get the job done right.
"Rick was very responsive at first and eager to get started on my bathroom remodel job for one of my apartments. He is commended for having to respond to quote request fast. I decided to give him a chance to do a good job before handing a bigger jobs for my other properties. Before the work started, I emphasized that the dust control and cleanup was very, very important to me. The job involved lots of demolition work inside the apartment - naturally, there will be lots of dust. The apartment is currently occupied and has lots of furniture, computers and audio equipment that I wanted to protect. I thought he and his workers were communicated this request. I even offered the use of dust control fan and Zip Wall to isolate the work area but he said he will be fine without them. Once the job started, I was away for one week to take care of my family. When I returned, I discovered that the door to the adjacent room was left open. That is my office with all the equipment and important papers. They left their construction material and equipment in this room. I was horrified that there are fine dust everywhere - on my printer, computer peripherals, furniture. I brought this issue up with Rick. Nothing happened. The worst part was that the job was declared done and I paid the service in full - They never returned to clean up and pickup the equipment. After almost a whole month, the supply and equipment is still there. I had to spend extra time cleaning up after their mess. Very unprofessional. Lessons learned. Do not pay the balance until all the cleaning is done and all the equipment removed. I expect the clean up and dust control to be a part of the job. I also repeatedly asked or professionally prepared invoices with vendor name and address, job details and the most important of all, the invoice number - all of these essential information is important to keep track of expenses for my projects. The SMS texts message and e-mail messages were not appropriate for this purpose. I explained to Rick that my CPA requires them many times. I even sent him a sample invoice and quote in Microsoft Word template - he never understood what I was asking. He is a nice guy, but not a good project manager or competent business person. The work was done, however, the work quality is fair to good - I had to go back and correct some sloppy work. Lacking attention to details and follow up bothered me. The biggest issues is the lack of clean up and keeping the worksite cleans so he and his crew gets an F. I do not think I will be hiring his company in my future projects."

FAQs for patio cover service projects in Middletown, RI
While the terms deck and porch are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct home features. Porches offer a roof that protects from the elements when coming and going from the house. Generally, porches are on the front of your home. On the other hand, decks are generally built in the backyard of a home and offer no roof or protection from the elements, like rain or snow. Porches typically require less maintenance and upkeep thanks to the roof, but both features require regular cleaning and repairs to maintain good condition.
The cost of an awning is $1,400 to $4,400 on average. However, this cost could be as low as $100 or as high as $7,500, depending on a few factors. The type of awning you choose, the size you need, and your location all affect your overall cost.
For example, portable awnings you can put up and take down yourself range from $100 to $400, whereas motorized awnings are more luxurious and cost between $2,000 and $3,500.
The cost to build a deck is $8,025 on average. However, this cost can range anywhere from $1,500 to $22,000, depending on multiple factors, such as size, materials, and deck type. You can expect to pay $30 to $60 per square foot when building a new deck.
Cedar decks are often the most cost-effective option, ranging from $4 to $9per square foot for materials. However, pressure-treated decking, which is resistant to rot, is more expensive, ranging from $15 to $25 per square foot for materials.
Awnings are either fixed or retractable and can be paired with a variety of cover materials. Fixed awnings are a permanent outdoor feature of a building. These are highly durable and require ongoing maintenance. Once installed, the position of this awning cannot be changed.
Retractable awnings are more popular than fixed awnings since the cover can open and close. This allows homeowners to open and close the awning, depending on the weather. When not in use, it can be closed to allow for extra space.
Besides the type of awning, you’ll need to choose the type of cover. Your awning installation professional will review your options with you, including availability and costs. The types of covers you can choose from include:
Wood, which is durable but can be damaged easily by rainwater and fire
Cotton offers flexibility, weatherproofing, and easy cleaning
Canvas is highly durable and is a good choice for retractable awnings
Metal is sturdy but is prone to rust
Polyester is easy to clean and is a more breathable option
Polycarbonate is highly resistant to UV rays and is difficult to damage
