Other mechanisms can help you keep your gate securely shut. Secure gate latch types will do the job, such as magnetic or spring-loading, self-closing lever varieties, or automatic gate openers. However, they won’t control the speed at which the gate closes. You can purchase slam plates that use rubber buffers to reduce noise and the potential damage-inducing impact of a fast-closing, heavy gate.

In most cases, you will need a permit to install a gate or fence on your property. Before your local municipality can issue a building permit, you might also need a site plan or survey to identify property lines. Otherwise, you could infringe on your neighbor’s property, leading to having to pay to take down and re-erect the fence. Permits for a gate and fence usually cost under $100. Luckily, your gate installation company will usually pull the permits for you and handle all of the red tape.

Ideally, your gate would swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it's generally best for the gate to swing inward. There are exceptions, however. For example, if your property is on a slope, your gate may not be able to swing in.

Keep in mind that there may be local building codes that require your gate to swing inward.

Fence gates sag because they have no support on the latch side of the gate to help hold them aloft. A gate wheel fixes that problem by providing support for that latch side. Remember that the ground must be level in front of the gate so the wheel can roll freely when you open and close it. If the terrain is uneven or slopes, a gate wheel won’t work.

Double gates come with the same gaps as single gates, with hinges taking up a quarter of an inch of space. The difference is that double fence gates also have a center gap, which needs a little more clearance. Space the center gap at half an inch instead of the usual three-eighths of an inch for a single gate.
