"I couldn't be happier with the work performed by Krain Construction. They were on time every day, extremely professional and very courteous. And I can't express how clean and tidy they were. When the job was complete, there wasn't one thing to clean up. I've used other contractors in the past and have had so much clean up, and there has always been a mess to clean up - but not with Krain! They were very clean and careful. Overall, I was very pleased with Krain Construction. Brian was upfront with all of the project details and cost. I have to say that if you are thinking of hiring Krain Construction, you won't be disappointed. Krain is a top notch company and I will most definitely hire them again."

"Job went well. Promptly received quote. Chris stopped one evening to confirm color match was acceptable. Started job when they said they would. Gutters look great. One minor issue-the downspout collars were installed with bar code labels on them. I phoned Chris to notify him and someone came within the week to remove them.

"We really like O'Dell and are extremely pleased. He was on the job site every day and I don't see that every day. He is probably going to be the one to do our bathroom, but we like to get other estimates. You don't get service like that. He was not the cheapest or most expensive, but we felt like he did a really quality job and thoroughly recommend him. He also put a garage on for us.  If there was a problem he was here promptly to take care of anything and he checked with us every night to make sure everything was the way it was supposed to be. I can't say enough nice things about him. He always returns our phone calls."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

You can choose 5/8-inch plywood or 3/4-inch plywood—anything thinner than these sizes may not withstand the impact of debris propelled by strong winds or can be easily torn off by intruders. Remember that the durability of the wood board is crucial, particularly for safeguarding your windows during severe storms. The effectiveness of using wood boards for protecting the investment you made in your home relies on using the appropriate material and ensuring proper installation.

Carpenters are trained to take on a wide range of home projects. You can hire a carpenter to do framing, roofing, build custom furniture, and make significant upgrades to your home. General carpenters are usually able to handle most jobs. However, you may also choose to hire a carpenter who specializes in a specific type of carpentry.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
