"I called Tim on a reference from the vendor of my fireplace insert. He came promptly within a few days. He performed his work and cleaned out the fireplace and swept it out. Very professional and kept the area clean. But I went to use it and the catalyst would not go back in place on my insert. I reached up and there are items that are lose and are blocking the closure of the catalyst and blocking the exhaust of the fireplace. Looking back on it, he was very fast to leave and was stumbling over his words before he left. Now I know why. I called him over a 2 day period and didn't get a return call. Not until I stated if I didn't hear from him by the next day that I would contact the B.B.B. did he pick up the phone. Told me he didn't cause the issue and he could return in a few weeks to take a look at it. Being a former computer repair technician for over 6 years, if I broke something, I came back as soon as I could to repair it. Weeks later was not in the conversation with my clients. I did not say things like "I didn't break it" and state things like "I didn't touch the catalyst, I didn't do anything with it". It was fine before he showed up, this unit is 1 year old and has 2/3rds of a face cord through it. So its not like its been beat on. I would suggest just don't. Find somebody else. He charges 300 dollars for 1 hour of work, so he charges a premium, but doesn't stand behind his work. Now I have to pay my fireplace vendor to fix it."

"We recently purchased our home and needed to have our chimney repointed before our new roof was installed. We worked with Ron at Anderson Chimneys Fireplaces Masonry to complete the job. Initial communication was great. Ron was very responsive and helpful during the quoting and scheduling process. He was extremely honest, always making sure that we got the best value for our money. Mainly due to these positive qualities, we decided to work with him instead of another contractor that had a slightly lower bid. He came out with another helper and completed the job within a day. They ground out the mortar joints, repointed the chimney, and applied a chimney crown. The chimney looks great and seems to be performing as expected. We would definitely recommend working with Ron and his crew. They seem like true professionals and masters at their craft."

"We have a 105-year old house with chimney problems. Chimney moisture is seeping through the plaster on inside of the house along the two chimneys in use, and the chimney for the furnace seems to be blocked. Al arrived promptly at the arranged time and took a look at everything, the inside damage, the exteriors of the chimneys, and the very old furnace in the basement, which we had also planned to replace this year. Al's professional assessment was that remedial work on the chimneys, including relining to prevent any recurrence of the problem, was not cost efficient if we still had to buy a new furnace. Also, the height of the chimney for the hot water heater was excessive and likely causing a draft problem on that chimney. Al's recommendation was to not put any money into chimney repairs and look into buying a high-efficiency furnace that would vent through the side of the house, bypassing the bad chimney. He recommended the same for the hot water heater, but since the unit was new, a vent booster fan could be used with the existing unit. Al was friendly and courteous and did not accept payment for his time and recommendation. Thank you Al!"

While it’s possible to sweep your own chimney, it’s usually not a good idea for two reasons. First, inexperienced DIYers are more likely to miss areas of the chimney, which still leaves the risk of house fire due to the remaining residue. Second, chimney sweeping seems like a simple process, but it’s highly dangerous. Soot and creosote are both carcinogenic and can cause breathing issues and lung damage. If you don’t take the same safety precautions that professionals do, you could be putting yourself at risk of serious bodily harm.
You should plan to ask your chimney sweeper questions about the cleaning process they intend to use, the project timeline, and more to get a sense of which professional is right for the job:
What is your process for cleaning chimneys?
How long will the process take?
Will you protect my floors from soot and debris?
Will you do a chimney inspection, too?
Do you have certification from the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) or the National Fire Institute (NFI)?
Will you need access to my roof?
The average cost for a professional chimney cleaning is around $250, but prices range from $130 to $400 or more, depending on a few factors. Some things that have an impact on your total include the size of your chimney, the number of chimneys cleaned, and how accessible the chimneys are.
In some cases, you don’t need to do anything to prepare for chimney sweeping, but professionals always appreciate leaving the area clean and easy to access. As such, it’s a good idea to move fireplace accessories like screens and fire tending tools out of the way, and lay down tarps of drop cloths around your fireplace opening to help keep your floors clean. Laying down a plastic sheet under those cloths or tarps is a good idea if your fireplace is surrounded by carpeting, just to add extra protection. Finally, secure any pets or children away from the work area.
The National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA) recommends chimney sweeping once per year as a means of avoiding house fires and massive property damage. Over time, creosote and soot build up in your chimney from burning wood and a lack of ventilation. These compounds are both highly flammable, which means a build-up of them inside your chimney puts you at an increased risk of house fire. Chimney sweeping removes any residue and helps reduce the risk of property damage and personal injury from fire.
