You can use the formula mentioned earlier to calculate the depth of tree roots. Each inch of width of a tree trunk translates to six inches of depth within the root system. Large trees extend anywhere from 2 to 6 feet into the ground, with some magnificent specimens going even deeper.

Ideally, you’ll have a good enough relationship with your neighbors that you can kindly mention this task in regular conversation. However, every neighbor (and neighborhood) is different. Your best bet will always be to ask directly and nicely, offering to contribute to the tree trimming efforts if you’d like. If executed correctly your tree should survive after being transplanted to a new spot. You’ll also need an appropriately sized root ball for a complete tree transplant. A good rule of thumb is that, for every inch in diameter, your tree’s root ball needs to be around 11 inches. So a tree with a diameter of six inches needs a root ball of approximately 66 inches.

If a tree stump is removed properly, the chances of a tree growing back are low. However, if a tree has a robust root system, roots can sometimes sprout and someday grow into a tree. The chance of regrowth will depend on several factors such as the type of tree, soil quality, and strength of the root system. In general, it is not recommended to plant a tree where a stump was removed.

It can take anywhere from one month to a couple of years for tree roots to grow back in sewer lines. Tree roots can cause extreme havoc on your sewer lines, potentially cracking them and causing untreated wastewater to make its way into the groundwater.
