Small jobs welcome

"Jeff did a beautiful job transforming our upstairs powder room into a full fledged bathroom. It was not a simple project since he had to build out the alcove for the shower stall even before building the stall itself. But everything was done with skill, professionalism, a concern for our having to live in the house and an extraordinary attention to detail that extended all the way to where towel racks should go. Jeff has also installed a dishwasher and garbage disposal for us. - from scratch - with excellent results. Jeff is a problem solver, the sort of professional you want for any job. We urge anyone who wants a home project accomplished well at a reasonable price to hire Jeff. You will be satisfied with the results."

"Marshall and his crew completed a full basement renovation for us - from cinder block walls and concrete floors to a fully finished space with multiple rooms. They were on time every morning, professional, and did beautiful work. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to family and friends for any project and we’re already planning to have them back to complete another project when we’re ready."

"Chris Jackson has done work for us twice on our 5-unit multi-family apartment building – once in December 2022, and then also in January 2023. Chris’ work is high quality – he’s a seasoned contractor, handyman and "master of the "punch list" who can handle both interior and exterior issues. His expertise includes electrical, gas stove repair, faucet repair, changing locks, repairing doors, putting in thresholds and transitions, repairing windows and screens, insulating pipes, mold remediation, putting in drywall, finishing and painting, cement work, boiler work, downspout repair, and more. On top of this, Chris is a personable fellow and cares about his customers. I’m a relatively new property owner -- Chris’ advice about property safety issues and tenant relations has been helpful. More importantly though, Chris himself is a landlord, and sees things from an owner’s point of view. Here's why this is important: When I explained there was a water-damaged hallway/stairwell repair project that needed to be done incrementally due to cash flow – Chris understood immediately, and explained how it could be done in sensible, lower-cost phases. I so appreciated his flexibility. This is a big deal, because when another vendor (not Chris) gave us an estimate for a long-list of electrical projects, he absolutely refused to break it into smaller phases. We plan to hire Chris again, we've recommended him to other owners, and are preparing our next “punch list.”"

Customers say: True professional

"We were very pleased with the results of our kitchen remodel project. Jim was an excellent guide for our planning process. He took his time and listened to what our plans were and helped us figure out the best options. He custom made our cabinets which were beautiful. As I am disabled, consideration was given to the project. Our floor was also replaced and it is now easier for me to get around using my walker. They were punctual and efficient and kept us informed of any changes in plan. I would definitely recommend them for your next project. God bless you and your family Jim."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

Begin by analyzing the blueprints and gathering the proper materials before framing a house. With the prep stages behind you, begin by framing the floor of a house on the newly set foundation. Exterior and interior walls come next, along with rough openings for doors and windows. Contractors will then add ceiling and roof rafters to finish things off.

Traditionally, bungalows are single-story homes, although having a half or partial story on top of the first floor is common. While adding a second story to a bungalow is certainly possible, the home would no longer be considered a bungalow by the strictest definition.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.
